Alan,

Naive question, but...

We would be applying from the UK. There seems to be a significant difference between Skilled Independent via London and Adelaide (97 weeks v. 52 weeks). Is it possible to apply directly to Adelaide from the UK, or do we have to go through London?

Second naive question...

If we got the go-ahead, how long do you actually have to get down to Australia to get the stamp in the passport? Is there any restriction on going for a short break to get the stamp and then returning to the UK to sort out personal affairs?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Steve,

1. You MUST now apply to Adelaide directly. A skilled visa application sent to London will be returned to you.

2. Re visa validation - more information is here:http://www.gomatilda.com/visas/faqs.cfm#07

Hope this helps.

Not entitled to re-enter Australia if you're not an Aussie citizen after 5 years of PR? Where did you get an idea like that?

Once the 5 years are up, you either get a Resident Return Visa (RRV) or take up Oz citizenship. An RRV allows a permanent resident to preserve his/her permanent resident status when travelling in and out of Australia.

Hi Peter,

Just curious, when you get a PR (and validate it by arrival),
do you automatically receive a RRV (on entry for instance) or
you are just entiteled to a RRV and have to take additional
formal steps to obtain it?

Or, OTOH, the PR "contains" the functionality of a RRV for
those 5 years?

Alan,

Thanks for that. Quite new to all of this, gradually realising the extent
of the useful resources available!

I presume that everyone on my application (wife, 3 children) would need to
travel in order to get the stamp - I couldn't travel on my own?

Thanks again for the pointers.

Steve

Permanent visas granted to new migrants have a re-entry facility for 5
years. This functions like a RRV, although it's not.

After the 5 year period is up, unless you've become a citizen, you
need to get an RRV to travel and re-enter Australia as a permanent
resident.

Hi Steve
All the family members need to validate.

Plus, the main applicant has to arrive first (or at least at the same
time as the rest of the family).
