Just starting NZ PR quest/penpal
 

Hi folks.

I'm a US citizen/US resident just starting the quest to get New Zealand
permanant residency approval.

So far, I found this newsgroup, and looked at the official NZ immigration
site,
but I'd like a complete editorialized version from beginnning to end. Can
anyone recommend a book? I saw something on the web by NuKiwi, looked
interesting, but I'm sure there are lots of choices out there. Any
suggestions?

Also, if there is a US expat who has make it though the
process and is now living in NZ, please send me an email - I'd like a
penpal!

Any opinions on my chances? Here are my specs:

me - 38, banker/investments, 15 year employment history, US citizen/US
resident
wife - 35, housewife, former banker, German citizen/ US permanant resident
baby - <year/US citizen
100k+
clean medical/criminal
all fluent in English, except the baby...

Hey Bob, glad to have you on board. Actually you already hit gold and the next rung down is just iron ore, there are no better newsgroups than this one for Aus and NZ immigration (seriously) and more important, with NZ immigration, you get what it says on the tin. In other words, just download the NZIS information in its entirety (including esp the Operations Manual) and that will tell you all you need to know. With NZ there are no tricks: the guidelines are clear and you just need to supply common sense evidence of anything you are claiming for points.

Suggest your wife obtains her US citizenship before you make any moves.

What do you plan do live on? NZ is full of unemployed former bankers, both
kiwis made redundant, and immigrants who have worked in asia or arabian
gulf.

Just a query over qualifications i.e. work experience has to be relevant to quals.

Bob - to answer the last bit of your post, you need to totalise your points for General Skills (see www.immigration.govt.nz) and see whether you and your wife reach the points passmark. If you don't meet the passmark but fall no more than 5 points short AND your occupation is on the skill shortages list, you can get a Job Search Visa. A JSV allows you 6 months to seek work in NZ, which would give you 'job points' and therefore allow you to reach the PR points passmark.

My point is that find a job before coming and don't be like so many bitter
immigrants who arrived and expected jobs to be waiting for them. Such
experience ruins their lives and doesn't help NZs reputation overseas.

Why do you suggest she get her US citizenship first? To ensure she has US
citizenship before leaving the US, or to make getting in NZ easier?

Promise not to laugh:

I want to build boats. I know NZ has a great boatbuilding industry, and I'm
sick and tired of sitting in the office. There are some awesome Yachts
being built in NZ (the Swan line in particular). Yacht building seems to me
like the one industry that retains craftsman type skills - glass lay-up,
cabinet making, engine and electrical work... it's a manly dream come true.

I know there are a lot of jobs in that industry available, but I've also
never done this work professionally. Although I'm highly qualified (call me
Mr. Handy!) and can do this work as good as any, I don't have work
experience to put down on the immigration form.

In the US this is no problem: You want to work at a boatyard, you walk in
the door and apply. Start at the bottom, and learn on the job. Germany is
the other way around: Go to school for 20 years to learn every detail about
an trade before you apply for a job (and then when you graduate you have the
honor of being unemployed). You can't even sweep the floors without
completing a floorsweepers apprenticeship first. I'm assuming NZ is more
the German model.

That's good info, thanks.

We actually don't need much money to live on. We can bring over enough cash
to sustain us for a few years. The only reason that a job is a must is for
the immigration points requirements.
