Default IT Jobs and Working Holiday Visa

Hi,

I'm 28, have obtained a working holiday visa for Aus, should be there in September time and will be looking for a Java job in Sydney or Melbourne(I have 3 years experience) when I arrive. I will probably taking a bar job to tide me over until I get one(if).

I do have a few questions and concerns though that I was hoping someone could help with!

Firstly, will the working holiday visa be an issue? I thought it would be fine as I thought well if it doesn't work I can probably re-apply for a specialist skill visa or get a sponsored visa... Then on a web site I saw that even having a WHV could be an issue when trying to get a Skilled visa?!? That scares me a bit!

Secondly, how is tax handled for contract work in aus? Is it the same as england in that I'd have to register a company etc.

Thirdly, what are the best sites for IT jobs? I've looked on the board and looked around and found a few... But a lot of the posts I found were outdated.

Thanks a lot!!!

Mate, you may get an IT job on a WHV. I have not ever heard of anyone doing this though. Most WHV people seem to do much more casual work with short term reception/admin seeming to be the only white collar job done.

I would use your WHV instead to arrange interviews perhaps with a view to getting sponsorship for another visa.

IT jobs on the internet would mainly be on www.seek.com.au

If there is a very short term contract then maybe they will consider you, but I think you will be ruled out of any longer contracts or permanent positions, there is no particular shortage of people with the right visa as far as I know.

I am not in IT, but I have a large department in a professional environment and I would not consider anyone on a WHV for my vacancies. I suppose you might get lucky, but I don't think it is a given.

Having a WHV won't have any impact on a skilled migrant application. Other than if someone spent two years doing casual work on a WHV then they could shoot themselves in the foot by not having the relevant and recent work experience required for skilled migration.

I've heard of this and I've also heard of people getting sponsorship while over in Australia while on holiday and not coming back.

I'm going to be doing the same thing and coming over on a WHV while I wait for my permanent visa to hopefully be approved. I'm surprised to hear that employers wouldn't consider candidates on a WHV. Surely if the contract is only for 6 months then this should not matter?

I'm heading to Brisbane....

Give it a go. Me and a mate looked for it on WHV in December/Jan 05/06. After about 4 weeks of getting no sniffs I gave up and took other work. He kept at it for another 3 weeks or so and landed a little low paid access/excel job. That led to another well paid one afterwards and sponsorship.

Patience and plenty of money is required.

I believe it has been said that if it is a short contract it might be ok.

But I would still take a more long term view, I took somebody on for a three month contract quite recently, but it was always my intention to see how it goes and convert to permanent if it worked out and indeed that is what we have now done.

I would never, ever consider anyone for a vacancy if they only had a WHV. I just couldn't take them seriously.

Here is the problem. You might meet the requirements for skilled migration now? If you come on a WHV and don't find work in your nominated occupation you may (you'd need to check the rules) no longer meet recent the work experience requirements if you choose to apply for skilled migration later.
Bear in mind if you take some role that is just vaguely IT related to your principal occupation the effect may be the same.

I half heartedly (probably more like quarter actually) looked for IT work (Oracle) on a WHV back in 2003/4 with no success...in those days the work limitation was 3 months, not 6 months, so even harder. I wouldn't employ someone on a WHV for a 6 month contract...when did an IT project ever run on schedule!? It would have to be for a significantly shorter term role.

There is so many backpackers in Australia atm I you'll have a better chance securing IT work over bar work.

If you want to do IT jobs on a working holiday visa you are stuck to short term contracts of no more than 2 months duration. No one will touch you for perm on a WHV.

The worst visa to have if you are looking to migrate. Most people on these visas do bar work or fruit picking.

I bailed up on a WHV in 1989, got several IT jobs and ended up getting sponsored for PR, then went contracting, those were the days! Hope its still possible for you.

I stuffed up, went back to the UK in 1995 and had to re-do PR last year, thankfully got it again!

As you said, "those were the days".

Which is so true...

They were also the days when Australia was a technology backwater.
