Default I'm here!

Finally arrived in Adelaide, after not getting much packed or planned
as I wanted to. Worked out okay though, since most things don'e work
here.

When you get here, get a bank account. This applies mainly to people
from South Africa, as they won't recognize anything here. Your
passport isn't enough ID! They have a points system - 70 points for a
passport, then say 35 points for an invoice with your details on it. A
bank statement works well. You don't need a tax file number for a bank
account - I walked into ANZ and was done in 5 mins. With that letter
from the bank you have a better chance.

Then go to the tax people - they won't help you just on the passport.
It's nothing, and I mean nothing, like the reciever in SA. It's like
being in a bank - you walk in, sit with a lady in a teller type
thing, and it's a short form. No queue, no dirt, no noise. And this at
4:30pm! They post the number to you in 28 days.

Bank fees are high, but so are they in SA. A Credit Union (sort of
like a building socienty) is fairly cheap, and you can get away with
no charges if you use the free transactions they give you etc.

If you convert money, they do it commision free if you open an account
at the same time. Creidt Unions can't convert money, they send it away
for a day.

You can't register for MediCare in the first 7 days. Immigration sends
your details to MediCare after 7 days, on a Tuesday and Thursday. If
they don't get there they will load you manually though.

Things close here. Forget late nights and weekends. You are going to
need time off work or a partner who is free for a bit. But, the
Aussies are accomodating. There is a feeling here of we all work
around each other - no one is demanding instant service etc. It isn't
that they are slow or relaxed - they seem to have the bigger picture
in mind - the whole group is working well as opposed to just a few
people.

Catching busses and trains here is easy. Cost $20.60 for a 10 trip
ticket and they run at least every 30mins. I'm getting to shops no
problem. And there are shops all over - you can live without a car for
a while here.

See you on this side.

In the first few weeks you should be able to open a bank account with
just your passport.

The 100 point system is explained here:

That surprises me. Normally they just need your passport and visa, as
far as I know.

they asked me too for two ids, one was the passport and the other was the bank account statement (opened b.a. having the passport only, not with ANZ but Westpac). it takes less than 28 days to receive the tfn, i've got mine in ~2 weeks. And don't forget if you have kids go to Centrelink. They are also very helpful. Overall I was impressed by the clerks' good manners and the quality of the public services.

I had the same experience in Sydney - passport with 457 visa in - no go! NO TFN, tried letter from work, not interested NO TFN, had to get utility bill or bank statement for temp accommodation (only there 6 weeks) before I was issued TFN in total it took me 2 months and I am here on 457 wanting to pay taxes!

Hopefully PR applicants get better deal

cheers
