Default IELTS prep, dyslexia

Hi all,

I dont know if im posting this in the right place, i have no idea what im doing on these things, sorry!

My OH is the one who will be getting our visa through his plumber skills. We are very sure we will pass medicals, police checks and his skills test but we are quite concerned about IELTS as my OH has quite bad dyslexia, so we want to do as much practising as possible.
I have seen a few website's that offer help, one that said "ace your IELTS" but im very wary of paying money to these things as i dont know how much help they can actually give.
Has any one else used any of these help sites? Which is the best? Which are cons etc, or are they all cons?
Anyone else with dyslexia that could advise us at all on this.
I know they give extra time at the tests, what do you need to prove you have dyslexia? as he hasnt had to have that info since school and i really dont think he would have that info 14 years+ later.
Thanks in advance

He really should have kept hold of those documents from school. As a mother of 2 dyslexic boys I went through a very long process of getting them both statemented in order to get them help. I kept hold of their statements until I first left for Australia and then gave them to each of them as now being adults they are able to understand how important they are (hopefully ). Anyways they were assessed by the Local Authorities Educational Psychologist and I am just wondering if his parents have not still got these documents then maybe the Local Authorities will If they do at least he can prove it. If not, he could go private and have a new assessment done by a registered Psychologist who specialises in this.

As for the IELTS test allowing extra time I really don't know but I would get in touch with http://www.ielts.org/ to find out how they cater for people diagnosed with Dyslexia. Lots of Luck

Just found this on IELTS

Special needs
If you have a disability or condition which might require special arrangements, you should discuss it with your test centre as soon as possible. Each case is considered individually and you will need a medical certificate. Test centres need three months to put arrangements into place ...

Thank you for your help.
I had seen a bit on the IELTS website but not the bit that you have copied.
I will check with his step-mum, who was the one who pushed for his dyslexia testing in school but I know she threw alot of his things out when he moved out but hopefully she kept that bit and if she didn't i'll see if the local authority has got any record of it, i hadn't even thought of that so thanks.

I have also read a few threads on here that say just to practice, practice , practice and thats for people without dyslexia so he can try lots of letter and essay writing on everyday events and see how he gets on with that.

I will keep you posted when he does the test but he has to give them 13 weeks notice due to his dyslexia so won't be for a while yet.

Thanks again

One other place to try would be his old school which may still have a record of his daignosis - I know they keep records after a pupil leaves, but don't know for how long. Still if the school is still there, and you can give dates he was there, they will have a look for you. Nothing to lose
