Sorry another question ....if a tourist visa is granted does the clock start ticking on it straight away ....my cousin is unsure of the actual dates to visit yet due to her work commitments so if she applied would the vis date start from when she is actually ready to come ...sorry if thats sounds daft

thanks in advance as always

Australian visas generally have two dates imprinted right on the visa sticker, or contained somewhere in your grant letter if you never obtained a sticker - first one is "must not arrive after XX/XX/XXXX" - your last possible date you can cross the border into Australia (it is somehow linked to the date of the grant, but do check), and the holder is permitted to stay for X months on each arrival (or "indefinitely" if it were to be a permanent residency visa). You may also have other conditions, like "no work", "multiple travel", etc.

So the date of the grant itself matters little, as long as you enter by the last date of entry, you can legally stay for a given period - it is also individual and may range from a few weeks, to 12 months.
