How bad does Rotaroa smell
Hi
We are considering moving to Rotaroa, we have read that there is a strong
sulphor smell in the area. Has anyone here been there and can they confirm
if it is bad. Is it worse some days, does it depend on the wind etc.
Thanks
Robert

the Rotorua smell... well, on the average day you hardly notice this but
when you do - overpowering! I remember one night from my short stay there -
it was raining heavily and the smell was everywhere! You can't escape this
but I guess that after a while you get used to this.

Hi - its not too bad at all!
There is a strong sulphur smell but we got used to it pretty quickly - it is quite weird to walk down the street with the steam from the thermal activity beneath wafting up through the gutters and drains though!

I was there during my honeymoon whilst travelling around both Islands.
As a tourist it seemed pretty intense. We went out to a steak house on the main road. I asked the waitress if you get used to the smell, she replied NO. On the pluss side however, all the locals have a copius supply of cheap hot water and most places have a spa bath!.

Re: How bad does Rotaroa smell
Howdy,
I used to live in Rotorua. Sure the place smells but it depends on where
exactly you live. Most tourists would stay near Fenton Street (Main Street
through Rotorua) and as there is a lot of geo-thermal activity along this
strip there are sulphurous smells. I remember it being quite strong earlier
in the day when it was calm. But if you live a few miles away from the city
centre, the smell is hardly noticeable until you come to town. But having
said this there is much more to Rotorua than the smell (which I assure
you.... not notice after a couple of months)
Beautiful forests, clean lakes and plenty of them, wonderful day trips to
Tauranga, Mt Maunganui, Taupo,Whakatane and much, much more...make the
move...you will not regret it.
