Default HI from melb

Hi all,

I am not posting a question here but would like to share some info about life in melbourne here.

I have arrived here 3 months back and settling down now....

Well, as i am in to IT and it was holiday time over here, I could not find job for first month but got one in just 40 days time. I am sure other jobs are doing good here.

People who wants help for getting house hold items can contact Salvation army or St vincent de paul and they are realy helpfull to assist you all newly arrived migrants.

Rent is very expensive but food, transport and other stuffs are OK here in melbourne. Just apporch any real estate agent with some bank balance and you will find house within 10-15 days time.

There is no other way to get job other than applying jobs online on Internet.

Hope this info helps.

SHIV........

Thanks for the valuable info, Shiv.

Just wondering what IT specialisation are you in to get a job so quickly? Have you been working in Aus before your PR grant?

Any recommendation of good Aus job sites?

Good on ya, mate and best of luck!~

Out of my experience working in Australia (Sydney) as an IT Consultant... I can say that getting the first job is difficult and takes a lot of time. Australian employers want "local experience".

But once you get your 1st break... there is no looking back.

It took me almost 6 months to get my 1st contract.... and from then on, was able to find subsequent contracts in less than 2 weeks.

I am an Integration Consultant specializing in Microsoft BizTalk Server & .NET

Best website is http://www.jobnet.com.au

Thanks madankumars!

You said the first break is hard to come by as aussies look for local exp. So with local exp out of the way, how can a new IT migrant secure this break then?

Lower expectation and take whatever comes? Cite Aus qualification to boost chances? Quote local Aussie friends as reference?

I'd suggest you take whatever comes first... local references are a big plus... not sure about australian qualifications as I didn't study there.

lowering your expectations & thinking long term does help...

In my case, I accepted a low rate on my 1st contract, and later I was able to increase my hourly rate by more than 50-75% each time I moved on....

If you start on a low rate and stick with the same contract (if renewed), then chances of a rate increase are a bit low, as the employment agencies have a hefty 20+% margin on your hourly rate

Yes you are right, the local experiance counts a lot and also reference are very important.

IT jobs are not easy to get but still its not a big deal and its a matter of time. In my case, agents have called my reference overseas and got the feedback. Its better to arrange a referees b4 you coming here to hunt job.

Dont wait till you find IT jobs and keep all options open and be ready to do anywork.
