Health check - 2010 Cancer & gene
 

Happy new year.

I had a stage 3 colon cancer in 2010 which was not spread and successfully removed surgically. I did not need chemo and am also in remission since then.

Can you I please check whether this cause an issue for Australian visa? Do I need to disclose the genes which caused the cancer or just mentioning the cancer would be sufficient.

At 10 years it shouldn’t be a deal breaker. They will however require a medical report, these need to show that the cancer is clear and you do not have any on going expensive issues (or are likely to have ) arising from it. The medical report may mention a genetic reason. Only volunteer information that you feel will be helpful, but if asked tell the truth.

Hi Rammy, thank you very much - that may be the first good news of 2021 :)

I assume a letter from GP should be sufficient as otherwise it would be hard to track the specialist. If specialist (NHS) letter required I may need to book the appointment privately (to avoid referral delays).

Hi there
It is very useful to see the actual form and can see the context - haven't seen it before.
A bit relieved that it asks for last 5 years cancer only (Q21). However there is catch in Q17 whether "you ever been admitted to hospital".
I think I will get letter from GP detailing the colon cancer surgery 10 years back and will try to track the NHS consultant but this would be a hard job as I feel he is retired (not in google :) ) and general NHS waiting time, if I had to loop that way.

They do require specific information to a format from a specialist. It doesn’t need to be the one that treated you though. If you are no longer under specialist care that is a good thing!

Can you please clarify this "They do require specific information to a format from a specialist".
Does the report has to be from specialist in a specific format? Where I can find that format?
If needed, I would be happy to book appointment with any specialist privately, however not sure how comfortable they would be in providing me a letter without knowing my history.

I am not an expert but they need to be able to show you will not need ongoing care or future care that will cost over a certain amount over the initial few years of you settling in Oz. It is all about cost and access to resources. They do not want new migrants to prejudice access to healthcare or resources for citizens or residents. I would speak to the panel doctor and ask what is required or pay for the services of an agent who understand the health issues.

To be honest though I wouldn’t worry too much if you have been clear for 10 years. Answer all questions honestly and see if a report is asked for, it might not be required.
