Default Hand baggage on BA to Sydney

Hello everyone,

What a great site this is!
I have a real important query, so if there's someone out there in the
same shoes or been there, please share!

We're flying with BA in December to Sydney. We were granted
35 kg each of check-in baggage. In addition we were told
we can have one item of hand baggage not exceeding 6 kg.
Now, on reflection, 6 kg is nothing. My handbag is 2 kg.

My question is: do they really weigh hand luggage?
Are they really so strict? If I have a handbag of ca. 12 kg,
would they really go so far to ask me to take stuff out of it?
When I asked one of their representatives (of course), she told
me, yes, the policy's strictly imposed.

Now, I don't know. Can you help?
Also, were you allowed to put in your checked luggage things
like tape recorder, food processor, discman, external CD-writer etc.

Any response much appreciated.

Regards
Alex

Hi Alex,

I've flown a lot with BA. From my experience they seem to be like most of the other airlines when it comes to hand lugguage.

I've had my hand luggage weighed before. On other occasions my hand luggage has been well over the 5 or kg limit (and looked it) and nothing was said.

If you want to be sure only take 6kg.

Good luck
Karl.

Flew with Ryanair (only to France) at the weekend and hand luggage was weighed and people asked to remove/repack if over weight and oversize. It was a smaller plane.

The only items we weren't able to use in the flight were phones, laptops and video cameras.

Anything else you can use and carry. (Food processor?????)
Mash...

Be careful they may take the food prcessor away, after all it could be used as a weapon !!
Joking apart, the blades are quite sharp and they are really strict on hand luggage at the moment for good reason.
I would pack it just in case.

I don't know about from your end, but flying out of Perth airport all hand luggage is weighed and measured. The max allowed is 5kg - may get away with 6kg. If it is over, they make you take out the excess. I was lucky I had a huge handbag and a plastic bag with me, so I could repack and didn't have to leave my goodies behind.
