In simple terms super refers to superannuation, the equivalent of the pension in the UK.

By law, Australian employers must pay at least the equivalent of 9% of a person's salary towards their superannuation. When looking at any salaries being offered, make sure you clarify whether or not the salary includes the superannuation component (eg. the employer may say the salary is "$50,000 inclusive of super", which means its really a base salary of $45,500).

You need to check this carefully, because superannuation is a deduction from the salary, that goes towards your hubby's pension when he retires. It is mandatory, which means he won't have a choice about whether to pay it or not, but the plus side is that he will have paid into a pension & his employer will have paid into that too. Looking long term, that means a bit of security in your old age.
