Going to Adelaide
 

Hi everybody, I'm new here so be gently with me:D
My family and I are hoping to go to Adelaide. I'm presently waiting for my trade application back from canberra, should be back in the next few weeks.

We went on holiday to Oz in February, visiting Adelaide, Sydney and Port Douglas. We had a great time, loved the place and the people (very friendly). Australia has a wonderful feel about it.

Anybody else heading for Adelaide?

Hi Nick,

I moved from the UK to Adelaide in November 2000. I fell in love with an Aussie in London and I got a de facto spouse visa about a year ago (after a year in Adelaide on a working holiday visa).

I absolutely adore the place. Adelaide has got a great climate, it's a manageable size, the surrounding areas are great, and there is a good social life.

Well, I could go on, but it's been months since I've been on this forum, and I'm keen to see a few more posts...and get the hang of the new lay-out.

Hi Nick,

We too are heading for Adelaide early next year (fingers crossed) we are just waiting for our final decision.

We have rellies and also friends there, and have made some friends via the internet. We have not visited Australia so we are in for a penny in for a pound so to speak, we did consider a reccie mission but after working out the cost for the 3 of us decided against it.

Lived in Adelaide over 2 years now and it just gets better..........watch
the suburb you pick to live in. If it is cheap ....beware!

From where I'm sitting they all look fairly cheap.....

We should have been heading out there in November, but unfortunately our house sale has fallen through so it looks like a new year new country scenario.....

Do you know which area of Adelaide you are going to? I presume somewhere near to your relatives? Ours are based in the northern suberbs (craigmore, andrews farm and Elizabeth!)

I was hoping that we might get fast tracked though the STNI scheme south Australia operates, but they e-mailed today so say it was only for people who had not achieved the bench mark on points and were waiting in the reserve pool!!!:(

You won't be disapointed with Adelaide, it's a lovely area.

As to the income levels they are lower than most other Oz cities but then so is the cost of living!:D

I'm a chef by trade. while I was out in Adelaide I saw an agency, they said that there should be no problem getting work there.

It also depends how much money you are taking with you! If you offset say half of your house purchase and maybe buy a car, that would help relieve some of the initial financial pressure!

Which areas in the north would you recommend? I work as a chef and will probably have to work in the city. We also have relatives in craigmore, andrews farm and elizabeth. I was thinking of around salisbury as it's only about 20-30 mins to the city from there! And in catering it's mainly split shifts. From salisbury it's only about 10 mins to the relies, what do you think?

Hi Nick,
Our rellies are in Aberfoyle Park and we also have friends in Port Noarlunga, so yes we'll be finding a house close to them.

We are currently awaiting a decision (Hubby has been STNI'd) we only applied in April so things have progressed faster than we expected. (fingers crossed now)

Thank you for your reassuring words that Adelaide is a good place (although I expect some wouldn't say so before anyone replies to it)! We were drawn to Adelaide because of it's beauty and relative cheapness compared to other parts of Oz, and of course it's where our rellies are.

Hi Nick/Julie,

My relatives live in Aberfoyle Park too!! We will be looking around that area to live. It is nice around there.

Husband is a plumber and I'm secretarial work.

Hi Nick

I don't know too much about the northern suburbs.
The ones within a few minutes of the city can be very expensive though.
Further out it does get more reasonable, it also can get a little industrial
and flat as well.

I certainly advise you to rent for six months and get the feel of the place.
Commuting here is not like the UK at all so don't worry about distance too
much.Adelaide is quite an easy city to get around.

I live 30 mins south of the CBD in the Onkaparinga Hills ( near the beach as
well).

Sorry I can't help too much on the areas you've mentioned.

Let me know how you get on, perhaps when you get here we can crack a beer
together ;-)

Hi Max

I suppose that after living here a while I have now started to think in
dollars.
Things may seem cheap at first due to the exchange rate and all but once you
start to earn the Aussie dollar things are put into a different perspective.

Adelaide is still one of the cheaper cities to purchase property even after
a large increase this year ( an average of around 25%). Beware at buying at
top price though , indications are that we shall see a "correction" and
prices could fall.

Prices vary enormously, you may wish to buy an apartment in Glenelg for a
million or have a decent sized property in a nice suburb for $350,000.

I live on 2.5 acres with "all the trimmings" -- I would have to be a
millionaire in the UK to have a similar property.

There are a few areas in Adelaide that seem to have a bit of bad press ( no
I am not going to mention them here).

It is very wise to rent and look around, there are so many different areas
it is difficult to choose.
