Hi all

im hoping to return to Australia once borders reopen but this time with a view to stay. Currently 24 and have a degree in Marketing. I notice people on here mention it’s important to get as many skills/make yourself more eligible for permanent residency especially whilst borders are shut at the minute.

I was wondering what specific type of things I can be doing in the meantime to help me get a better chance of achieving this over the next year or so.

I’m a UK citizen. I was on a WHV which was cut short due to Covid so hoping to reapply on the WHV. Apologies if I’ve not given enough info just let me know

So a WHV is just that - a working holiday. Not had any experience of it myself - most work seems to be fruit picking, some touristy jobs, bartending, etc. and not something that leads to permanent residency.

For a permanent visa, unless you have an Australian partner, you will be looking at occupations on the skills list which usually (but not always) require a combination of relevant qualification and experience in the position. I was hoping to use the WHV option as a gateway to getting back into the country and then explore my further visa options whilst there possibly through an agency. Is this a good way of going about it?

I have about 3 years experience in marketing so I believe I would be eligible under the ‘Marketing Specialist’ occupation. I’m also looking for other ways that could improve my points if possible.

Generally (certainly pre-covid) unless you have done the 3 months farm work to entitle you to another year, a WHV is a one-off. Obviously a lot of WHV-ers cut short their time here, but AFAIK there is no intention for the immigration department to allow them to return for the balance of their visa time.
They may change their minds, nothing is impossible with them, but I doubt it.
So you really need to start looking at something longer term.

Hi, thanks for the heads up. I managed to get my farmwork done luckily so I should be eligible. That’s useful to know though as I wasn’t sure if I was going to need it or not when reapplying.

There have been some changes to the work/holiday visa (subclass 417), I believe it's possible to resume this visa if you've had to leave Australia due to Covid. Also, subject to certain conditions, it's now possible to stay for a third year on this visa.
There's also a new visa (subclass 462) that also allows a 3 year stay, subject to meeting the conditions. Have a look here:

I did wonder if they would let people re-enter on part-used WHVs, especially as there is such a shortage in fruit-picking etc. I see the scheme started in July, which could benefit a lot of people. Wasn't sure if the third year had actually been introduced, thought that stalled due to COVID.

Will be interesting to see what effect that has on flight caps and the lack of seats. No offence intended to anyone but if WHVs start arriving again whilst PR & citizens are being bumped off flights left right and centre, I struggle to see the reasoning or the fairness.

Looks like you should be good. The one year experience needs to be in the previous 5 years, so if coming on a WHV you need to keep an eye on dates.

For that occupation, it looks like you are going to need sponsorship so worth checking what states or territories have the occupation on their lists and heading to one of those on your WHV. Visas:

• 190 - Skilled Nominated (subclass 190)
• 407 - Training visa (subclass 407)
• 489 - Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489) - State or Territory nominated
• 482 - Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) - Short Term Stream report caveats apply
• 187 - Regional Sponsor Migration Scheme (subclass 187)
• 494 - Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (provisional) (subclass 494) - Employer sponsored stream
• 491 - Skilled Work Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 491) State or Territory nominated

If you can get sponsored by a state or territory, you will be invited providing you meet the minimum points. There is a points calculator - https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help...nts-calculator . I did a quick run through based on what you've said, and if you can get at least 10 points from the English test you should be okay. As you only have 3 years experience, and one will be used for the skills assessment, you will only have 2 years for points I think.

Your degree on it's own means little. You need an occupation on one of the skilled occupation lists. That will mean gaining several years experience in an occupation on the list. At the same time, note that the lists change regularly so no guarantee that any occupation on there now will be in several years time.

Excellent thanks for the help. Will take this all into consideration! I think the main thing is I need to get back there and start looking for jobs with sponsorships etc

The best visa from that list would be the 190 - state/territory sponsored and PR from the get go.

I would be focussing on if you can meet the requirements for the skills assessment, if you can reach the points total, and if any states / territories are actually sponsoring.
