Based on my searches in this newsgroup, I think the best way to
transfer a few 10K from the US to an Australian bank account would be
via wire transfer. Does any one have any advice as to whether I should
do the USD --> AUD conversion prior to sending the wire transfer. Or
would I get better rates when the Australian bank did the conversion?
(By the time I was done asking someone about wiring details, to an
account I ignored after opening it 4 years ago during my initial
validation visit, I was too exhausted to get the conversion rate from
her.)

And also: If wiring the funds from a US bank a/c to an Australian one,
and only carrying limited $s in cash, am I correct that the 'over 10K
declaration' is not applicable?

You should ask your US bank:
Can I open an AUD account with you? Can I purchase AUD from you to put
in my new AUD account? What is the exchange rate?
Then compare their exchange rate to the wire transfer rate if you will
send USD. Then do the math.
You could also wire transfer USD -> USD and then just convert to AUD
while in Australia. Again, do the math.
