Excel / SQL Server Developer - ACS
 

Hi,

I am an Excel developer and have been for 7 years. I work in a corporate environment developing databases in SQL Server, and connecting Excel solutions to the database. These are big applications (6 months + of development) used to drive some key business processes. Also, I do a lot of data modelling activities using Excel and SQL server, which often have a shorter development time.

My worry is, will this not be seen as true development, and under what code should I apply. I have a BSC from the Open University with distinctions in the majority computing modules (object oriented programming etc.).

Will my listing myself as an Excel developer with SQL experience (I use SQL server each and every day for the past 5 years to build tables, procedures, functions, views triggers, constraints etc.) be "frowned upon".

I dont want to waste the money going through the ACS, when my wife is a radiographer and would walk straight in. She is only working part time however, and we have already paid an agency £1000 to start the process in my name.

I have done some ASP.NET development (vb.Net) developing business intelligence dashboards which used Dundas .net components, Telerik.net components all connected to a SQL Server 2005 data warehouse I created and managed.

I have no certifications, but have ben doing this job for 7 years - same job, same company.

These are not little VBA macros, but full blown applications, often interfacing with LDAP, Active Directory etc, but all are data driven (ADO).

If your wife is better suited to be the main applicant without any risk, go for that first. To qualify for any points for spouse, you would need to have a successful skills assessment. ACS is the only option. Check out the ASCO codes under ACS in SOL3 and see if you match any of them. Check out the descriptions. SOL3 is on www.immi.gov.au

I believe your OH has posted her own thread. She will not qualify for a visa as she has only been working 14 hours a week. You either need to continue on your skills or your OH increases her hours, wait a year and then you apply on her credentials.

Hello Indy,
You say you have already paid an agency £1000 to assist you in the process. I presume that they have done an initial assessment and are confident that you will meet the ACS requirements. They should be reviewing your qualifications and employment details and telling you what occupation code to use.

I suggest you have a chat with your agent.

ASCO Code is probably 2231-17 Applications and Analyst Programmer.

My concern is whether Excel is deemed a development language. They may just think "he makes very clever spreadsheets"....

Do not worry about all that.. each occupation has its own set of roles and responsibilites, you have been doing eveything thing that a databse developer does + VBA is also a programming language.. so just project your profile in the best possible way you can and I dont think you will face any issues with your assessment... all the best
