Without wishing to be pedantic, this does not extend your ETA, but

The downside being that there is a good chance of Condition 8503 - No
Further Stay. You can't even go offshore and get an ETA (without
8503) to replace this visa while it's still valid, as since July 2002
ETAs can't take effect if another visa is in effect.
A lot of people are getting themselves into a visa mess by obtaining
tourist visas onshore that have condition 8503 in them. Depending on
what your plans are for afterwards, you should strongly consider
getting professional advice.
