Emmigrating to Oz with an 18 yr old child

Hi all,

We are currently in the process of the Immigration process, but are unsure of how my now 17 yr old will come over as a dependant.

he is currently in full time education, he will be 18 and ready to move up to university at the same time as we come over around Sep 2010, with him starting at the next available intake. (term intake dates unknown)

so my questions are:

what evidence is required to show that he is a dependant and in full time education?

how are his results (A-levels and BTEC Level 3 courses) converted to the Aussie system in order that he can apply to attend an Aus Uni?

what is the process for applying for a Uni place and how long does the application process take?

if anyone can provide a web link to the info that would also be much appreciated.

thanks in advance for your assistance.

You would be wise to contact the university he wants to attend and ask them what his A level grades would need to be to get admitted into whichever course he wants to take. Applications for 2011 courses (which is what he will be aiming for) begin around August time but, again, check with the university of his choice. The fact that he is in full time education - and you have evidence of his enrolment, should be enough to justify dependence. His A levels will convert quite well - we have had people on here who have had to get lower grades at A levels to get into equivalent courses in Aus than they would have in UK but the uni will tell you what they require.

Be prepared to pay his tuition fees up front if you are permanent residents - he will probably get domestic fee rates but he wont be able to defer them or get any support for being at Uni so you will have to pay by the semester upfront. If you are coming on a 457 visa then it will be international student rates which are far higher.

Just to let you know that with such a detailed question you have to give people time to answer - especially as you posted at 1am Queensland time :)

Oh I agree. Very serious too.

Just pictured a pimply, 6ft 18 year old being told to go to his room and fill out his immigration papers.:rofl:

Hi
we just got granted visas for family of six, including an 18 year old. He was 17 when we applied .
Seems straight forward. Send application an later acceptance of college course, also made statutory statement saying he is still dependent on us financially. ( he says he will give Oz a ' try'...who knows what will happen)
With regards to schooling/ study..I don't know, sorry.
