Electronic visa - advice please!

Electronic visa - advice please!
An old colleague of mine (British) and his wife are in Oz, renting in Sydney, for the British winter. He's just realised that his electronic travel authority visa is only valid for a three month stay, although it is a year-enter-many-times type.
Anyone know if he can get an extension so that he can stay for his intended six months? He can of course do a day trip to Auckland but would prefer to stay here if he can!
He isn't interested in remaining , just doing the winter here.
