Electrical or Electronics Engineer
 

I just can't decide for which occupation to apply for Skill Assessment. At my present job I'm working as a Maintenance Engineer of Automation and distribution of low voltage in Industrial facility. Briefly, I'm working with PLCs, Frequency Converters, an other industrial electronic and electrical equipment, such as different types of measuring devices (weight, distance, flow, etc), motor protection devices, contactors...
I also make changes in electrical documentation, making software for PLCs, HMIs, etc.
So my doubt is what occupation for Skill Assessment will be the best choice for me?

You need to consider that Electronic Engineer comes under pro-rata basis invitations. Also Electronic Engineer ceiling is already half filled.

But Electrical Engineer occupation doesn't have above issues.

my degree is MS Electrical Engineer with Control and Systems specialization on Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture University of Split, Croatia.

I find my self in both occupations, partially...and don't want to make a mistake in the process of Skill Assessment. I would like to apply as an electrical engineer since there is no ceiling for that occupation, and I just want to check are there enough elements in the brief description I post it above. I send the same query to EA, and have to wait 5-7 days for an answer.
I already prepare a draft of my 3 career episodes, which I'm planning to adapt in a way that will best suit the chosen occupation and summary statement of course.

I wrote a reply to old.sparkles, but it has to pass admins check. I'm aware of the ceilings for some occupations, thanks kkasunperera.

I think in your shoes I would want to go Elec Eng route too. Waiting 5 - 7 days isn't too long, but they may not give you a definitive answer. I think most of the engineers I've worked with would describe themselves as Elec Eng with control rather than Electronics Eng.

I got an answer from the EA sooner than I expected.
They say:
"it sounds like you are not working as an Electrical Engineer (ANZSCO 233311) or an Electronics Engineer ANZSCO 233411.

It does sound like you are currently working as a Mechatronics Engineer ANZSCO 233999, or possibly as an Automation and Control Engineer ANZSCO 233513." :-D

That Mechatronics Engineer is under Other Engineering Professionals - Engineering Professionals not elsewhere classified. It is something like third mechanical, third electrical and third electronics, and I still don't want to give up from applying as an electrical eng, and going to adapt my CDR as much as I can in an electrical way.

So I wrote them again asking what could happen if I apply for an occupation that Engineers Australia find is not suitable from my qualification and experience shown in my CDR, and they find it is more suitable for some other occupation, will I receive a negative assessment, recommendation to apply for other occupation, or, positive assessment for the occupation that Engineers Australia find is suitable for me. have to wait 2-3 days for an answer.

any suggestions or experiences with similar problems?

and here is what they said in one of theirs articles:
At present mechatronic engineering is covered by ANZSCO 233999 engineering professionals
nec, together with other engineers that are not grouped elsewhere. Engineers Australia believes
that mechatronic engineering should be allocated its own ANZSCO code and considered for
inclusion in the SOL.

Something to note is that the nec group is 1. on the CSOL so you will need a state or employer sponsor; 2. already on a pro-rated basis due to the number of EOIs already submitted.

I didn't go the CDR route (was an accredited degree) so can't comment on how to write your career episodes.

it looks like Engineering professionals not elsewhere classified - Mechatronics included within occupation is on the WA (and WA, Perth is my goal from the beginning) demand and is available (it is a great news for me)... and even if it is on pro rated basis, if I get positive assessment under that occupation and I apply for 190 visa, I could collect 70 points which is the actual threshold...hope they will not raise it in the next few months...

could anyone explain me that pro rate basis, as I understood, invitations will be available proportionally until july 2014? Maybe they will raise threshold but the maximum amount of invitations for certain occupations under ceiling is divided by the number of invitation rounds? Did I get it right?

70 points is threshold for who?

DIBP is 60 points - is WA setting a higher criteria?

Occupations under ceiling have higher thresholds. Latest invitation round threshold for Other Engineering Professionals was 70 points.
Electronics Eng was 65, Chemical Eng 70, etc.
Nothing about states, but ceilings for certain occupations, that I suppose varying according to pro rated basis. ;-)

correct me if I'm wrong....

The ceiling doesn't vary as such - it's just with limited places available, and invitations are issued to those with the highest points score first. If all applicants have the same score, then invitations are issued to those who lodged an EOI first.

If WA is still sponsoring the occupation tho, I'm not sure how the invitation will be affected

as I remember last year, there were no pro rata basis invitations included with certain occupations and the threshold was the same for every occupation, some of them reached their ceilings very soon, and there were no invitations few months for those occupations.

So in my opinion different threshold for the occupations that are about to reach their ceilings is result of pro rata basis invitations. if the threshold is the same (60 points), some occupations will reach their ceilings in few first invitation rounds, and that's it.

The threshold is the same - the number of invitations that can be issued in each round has changed - and this has the effect of changing the amount of points needed to get an invite - but as can be seen, even in restricted occupations, invitations are still issued at 60 points if there are no higher rated EOI's.

And this is for 189 I think - state sponsorship is not included in these results I think

I got an answer from EA and they say:

"If your application is suitable for an assessment with Engineers Australia, but not in the occupation you nominated, then your case officer would still give you a successful assessment outcome. In the case there are several possibilities, your case officer would contact you to discuss the options."

think I'm going to apply for an Electrical Eng., however...
