Default Could I fail the medical because of my weight?

I am 28, fit, healthy, non-smoker, non-drinker, no medication, no past history, mother of 2 young kiddies (14m & 2.5 yrs) but I have a BMI which makes me Obese.

Could I fail my medical?

Has anyone got any experience?

Kind thanks

Depends on your BMI. If it is below 40 then it is a grade A for a temp visa, below 30 for a permanent visa.

At the moment, I think I am a 46.1 BMI

BUT, I am working on it, and there is no greater motivation than getting it below 40 before my medical... just means I have to lose 2.5 stone!!! I have already lost a stone, so that will put my total loss at 3.5 stone.

Can you explain the GRADE system to me please? What is an 'A' and what would I be if I do have a BMI of greater than 40? What are the implications of Grade A or worse?

You get a grade for the medical (A or B). If it is an A then it should be a formality to pass the medical. If it is a B then it needs to be refered to a MOC (Medical officer of the Commonwealth). It is not necessarily a problem, just needs further investigation by a doctor. If you don't have any complications, that it should not be a major problem.

Need to correct what I said earlier, that refers to a temporary visa so it depends what you are applying for.

We're applying for a Skilled Migrant Visa.

I'm on the case with my weightloss already.... this is just the motivation I needed.

Thank you....

Best buy some more salad leaves tomorrow.... got a long salady journey ahead of me!

It's a great incentive :-) And if you are fit and healthy no reason for it to be an issue.

Most NRL players have BMI over 40, it is a flawed way of measuring.

I know, but unfortunately most GP's (and maybe Medical Officers who do medicals) don't agree ( They just see figures and don't look at the whole person in my experience.

I know that I'm healthy.... but just becasue I'm short (5ft2) and fat (!!!) I am deamed "so obese, she's likely to drop dead any minute" type of person.

But, I WANT to lose weight, so this is a great incentive.

Weight in itself is not a barrier to migration. It's the accompanying conditions that cause the problems. Diabetes, hypertension, etc. If you are otherwise healthy and making an effort to reduce your BMI you shouldn't have too much problem.

Other half was 36 when we applied for a temp visa and the Dr said he may have to have more tests as there was a cut off point around that weight, but he did not know exactly. He didn't need more tests, so looks like those figures could be right. Also looks like he needs to loose a bit of weight before we apply for PR!
