Default Cottesloe or Subiaco

Hi Everyone,

I'll be moving to Perth with my wife to work as a doctor at the Royal
Perth Hospital for 1 year from Jan 2005 after which we'll return to
the UK.

I've looked at the accomodation websites and am having difficulty
deciding between Cottesloe (because the idea of living in a beachfront
apartment for a year sounds great and something we'll probably never
have the chance to do again) or Subiaco (because of the closer
proximity to my work at the Royal Perth Hospital, and the
shops/restaurants/café vibe)
- however having looked at the websites it seems whats available in
Subiaco for my maximum weekly rental of $500 is not that great (ie
small 2 bedroom partially furnished apartment)

can anyone give me any advice on choosing between the 2?

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

Had a similar decision when I first came over, we went for Cottesloe in the end, we didnt have jobs initially and the beach won! Not sure on the rental prices youve been given, that seems high, we rented a 3 bed 1 bath 2 toilets house with a pool for $400 a week, and rental prices havent done a great deal since then. If your looking for a good apartment complex to rent see if you can find anything on the web in Mosman Park, (right next to Cottesloe) still on the train line, look for an apartment on Wellington street a unit within number 10, its a recently renovated block inside and out, about 8 floors, excellent views inland and out to the ocean and would probably rent for between 250 -350 a week unfurnished depending on floor. There are some for sale at present and im toying with the idea of buying one to rent out, so you never know your luck! or mine!

In the vs Subiaco argument its a tough one, there's more of a shopping/restaurant community in Subi... but subi's further from Freo than Cott which is an alternative to going out in Subi... If you planning on a beach front apt in Cottesloe youve got a good 15-20 min walk to the train line, not sure if thats an issue. I would say that although I loved every minute of being in Cottesloe as soon as we got a car we stopped going to the beach there and drove up the coast mainly to City Beach which is much nicer and quiter (Cott gets busy at weekend's, lots of traffic etc) or up to Trigg beach were the surf is better. When we decided to buy a property we chose City Beach over Cott... the only draw back is its not on the train line, but the buses are pretty good into the city.

Id wait until you get here and spend a couple of weeks checking things out, pictures and website descriptions can be misleading. Then make a decision.

good luck
steve

Distance wise there really isn't a huge time difference travelling
between Cottesloe or Subiaco to the city. And given you'll only be
here for a year consider this - will you ever get the chance to live a
stones throw from the beach again?

Anyway, in my experience residents of Subiaco have a highly inflated
opinion of themselves....but there is a lot going on at nights in
Subi, which isn't something you can say of Perth in general.

Thanks for the info.

I'm starting to come round to the idea of Subiaco mainly for the
convenience of work and local amenities but am still undecided

- all of the Aussies I've spoken to say Subiaco whereas all of the
Poms that have stayed for a year or so say Cottesloe - I think its
because the Aussies are so used to the beach and probably don't
appreciate what a novelty/treat it is for us Poms that live in
land-locked cities with perennially dull weather. I like the thought
of arriving home, stepping out onto the beach for a quick swim, then
lazing on the beach to read a bit then back into nap, out for a local
dinner then back to sleep. But I wonder if it might get boring very
quickly and whether there is enough to keep me interested in Cottesleo
apart from the beach?

Also my wife is very pale/freckly so she has to particularly avoid the
strong sun

I've a few more Q's please;

1. Are the cheaper areas surrounding Subiaco such as
Claremont/Nedlands/Leederville very similar and nice?

2. I'm now starting to think about renting unfurnished as it seems
that over the course of a year this will be the cheaper option even
considering the cost of furnishing somewhere - do most unfurnished
apartments include a washing machine/fridge/cooker or not??

3. Is a budget of $4000 to furnish an unfurnished flat to a fairly
comfortable standard reasonable? How much should I expect to get back
when i try to sell the stuff after a year?

4. If I budget $6500 for a car -will I be able to get something
moderately comfortable with air-con and reliable enough to last me a
year including a few holiday drives around Western Australia - and how
much should I roughly expect to get when I sell it at the end of the
year?

5. Apart from the rent - what other (and how much) 'hidden' costs
should I budget for eg utility bills, any local council taxes that I'd
have to pay??
