Hi all,
I've been offered a scholarship to ANU and am wondering what living standard I can expect if I accept the offer. (I'm American and living in Fort Collins, CO). Someone who is intimately familiar with Canberra can help me by listing typical prices for the following "basket" of goods: a gallon of gas a pound (or kg) of fresh fruits or vegetables one month's rent for an austere two-bedroom apartment a latte (yes, that's right) a month of local phone service It's not the exchange rate that I'm wondering about but the cost of living in "real" terms. What do you think the minimum annual amount is for a single young person living in Canberra? Can you tell me what the commercial interest rate is for a typical savings account? What about rates for lending, are they generally higher or lower than the U.S.? Lastly, are medical costs generally higher or lower in "real" terms? My student health insurance will barely cover costs, and I expect to make up the difference. If my insurance only pays say 85% of a prescription, I want to know what that 15% is going to be. Any help would be appreciated. Please be as specific as possible. Regards, Theresa Krebs |
All the prices I refer to are in Australian Dollar.

Approx 15 years 2 bedroom town house in Swinger Hill (opposite Phillip) cost around $200 per week Other area like Belconnen cost about the same. These savings has a limited withdrawal facilities. Expect a much more less interest on normal savings account. Eg. if you open a streamline express with Commonwealth Bank, they only pay you 0.1% interest. Go to www.ingdirect.com.au , www.commbank.com.au , www.westpac.com.au , www.national.com.au > > > > For more info please look at Medibank private website at www.medibank.com.au and look for OHSC (overseas student health cover). It will tell you what is covered and what is not covered by the insurance. |
