Confused as what to do!
 

Hi!

Im Chris, after a recent trip to australia and the horrible english weather i have decided that i want to move to aus. I didn't want to go alone and my cousin agreed to go with me. She's a nurse so she should have no problems.

I've done a fair bit of research and i'm now confused. I will be applying for the skilled independant 189 visa. I'm a qualified building surveyor but not chartered. I have been in employment for 8 months after a graduated.

With the info i have so far, i've gathered i need to do a skills test and i meet the 60 points requirement. As i'll be using my profession to gain the visa i need to know which area it would ocme under as i can't find the profession building surveyor. There are two lists i can find:
building and construction which lists
Building associate
construction project manager
landscape architect
project builder
quantity surveyor
valuer
urban and regional planner


There is another list called surveyor and valuer that lists
Construction estimator
Quantity surveyor
Valuer
surveyor

I'm not sure which to go through, i'm awaiting a call from an advisor to help. Is there anything i should be considering prior to launching a full application?

Google and ABS gives building surveyor as an alternative to Building Inspector - 312113 - 1220.0 - ANZSCO - Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations, First Edition, Revision 1

Only listed on the CSOL so needs sponsorship if this is the right occupation - https://www.immi.gov.au/Work/Pages/s...ists/csol.aspx

Google state sponsorship and NT, WA, SA, VIC, TAS, NSW, ACT or NSW to see if it's on any state list as that's the easiest way to sponsorship


If it is the right occupation, Vetassess do the skills assessment so check out that you meet their criteria

Have you had a read through of the ANZSCO descriptions for each of the roles (it helps to use the 6 digit number). Quantity surveyor is here: 1220.0 - ANZSCO - Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations, First Edition, Revision 1

It is up to you to match what you studied/trained/working as to the role.

If you are happy with that, when you look at the SOL (https://www.immi.gov.au/Work/Pages/s...lists/sol.aspx) there is a list of assessing authorities next to each job title.

For "Quantity Surveyor" the ANZSCO code is 233213 and the authority is AQIS. A quick google search gets me to the AQIS webiste (Policy and Application Form), looks like you would be applying under Pathway 3. If you don't think your job fits under "Quantity Surveyor" you will have to go back to the SOL list, look up another occupation and trace forward the same way

I have had a look through and 133112 Project Builder looks to be the closest one.

Building surveyors work in many areas of property and construction so the work is diverse and rarely routine. Tasks often involve:

• ensuring projects are completed on budget and to schedule;
• advising clients on schemes and projects and determining requirements;
• preparing scheme designs with costings, programmes for completion of projects and specification of works;
• organising documents for tender and advising on appointing contractors, designers and procurement routes;
• determining the condition of existing buildings, identifying and analysing defects, including proposals for repair;
• advising on energy efficiency, environmental impact and sustainable construction;
• instructing on the preservation/conservation of historic buildings;
• advising on the management and supervision of maintenance of buildings;
• dealing with planning applications and advising on property legislation and building regulations;
• assessing and designing buildings to meet the needs of people with disabilities;
• instructing on construction design and management regulations;
• negotiating dilapidations (when there is a legal liability for a property's state of disrepair);

Project Builder

plan, organise, direct, control and coordinate the construction of civil engineering projects, buildings and dwellings, and the physical and human resources involved in building and construction. Tasks

• interpreting architectural drawings and specifications
• coordinating labour resources, and procurement and delivery of materials, plant and equipment
• consulting with Architects, Engineering Professionals and other professionals, and Technical and Trades Workers
• negotiating with building owners, property developers and subcontractors involved in the construction process to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget
• preparing tenders and contract bids
• operating and implementing coordinated work programs for sites
• ensuring adherence to building legislation and standards of performance, quality, cost and safety
• arranging submission of plans to local authorities
• building under contract, or subcontracting specialised building services
• overseeing the standard and progress of subcontractors' work
• arranging building inspections by local authorities

Im going to have a conversation with the Australian Visa Bureau. How did you go about your applications and what were the typical costs?

The Skills assessment will also cost a fair bit - you'll need to check the assessing body for that.

Then you need to consider police checks and medicals - there is a sticky thread at the top of this forum with some costs for medicals in the UK.
Agents costs vary and you will need to get quotes from them, depending on what visa and whether they are involved in the whole application or not.


Now, I know you haven't asked for advice for your cousin, but I just wanted to throw in a comment that she should review the requirements to register here in Australia as a priority before thinking about a visa. She will need to be degree qualified, not diploma, in order to register with AHPRA.

I've had a more in depth look, still need to speak to an adviser yet, my cousin is going to apply for the visa with me as an additional on there. I've had a look at a few prices and been quoted nearly 6k to use an agency. Id rather do the leg work myself and save some dosh. Ho much did you pay for yours and how did you go about it?

Oh, i've looked at prices for medical and it was £260 for an adult and a police check didn't show the cost but i have a friend who is a copper and may be able to sort it for me.

Other additional cost i can see/think of would be the skills testing, would that apply to both of us or just to my cousin as she would be the main person?

Mine isn't relevant, it was a Spouse Visa, back in the mists of time, and I didn't use an agent, sorry.
Your mate can't sort the police check, it has to be done through ACRO and costs I think around £45 now - posting from my phone and it won't load the link, but if you go through that link I posted it gives you all the links for police checks from various countries.

Your cousin can't be the main person, I'm afraid, it doesn't work like that..... you can only bring a partner/spouse and dependent children onyour own visa, and the same for her. So you both need to get skills visas of some kind, individually. Which means you both need a skills assessment.

Bear in mind it gets cold here, too... 10° this morning when I got to work at 6:30 and it's only the beginning of winter.

I also think you're going to struggle with passing a skills assessment and meeting the visa requirements if you have only worked 8 months since you graduated.

Are you married to your cousin or living together as husband and wife for 12 months +?

I dont know exactly how it works for your skill assessment but for ICT jobs they always require a few years of work experience ( 2 if your occupation is closely related to your degree, 4 if not) before they give you a positive skill assessment. So keep this in mind as you have only 8 months of experience.

Right okay, so i've gathered that we need separate visa's and i need two least a few years work experience. I may contact the assessment authority and sepak to them about it and see what they say. Rather get some advice first from them as it's $810 for it! I'm hoping to hit brisbane way or around there, I'll have to do some more research now! Cheers for the replies! and as for marrying my cousin eww! I'm not from the deep south!
