Default circumcision in OZ 8=) vs ==8

Dear ALL, In December I'm awaiting twins - two boys!!

Would very appreciate your comments about popularity of circumcision in Australia.

PS - my question is not a religious one, but social.

Thank you, Gdalya, Tel Aviv

The general consensus among the public, as well as doctors and surgeons seems to be
that it is an unecessary, cruel and barbaric practice.

I would say most jews are cirumcised. From time to time there is debate = over
it. Some say its cruel others say its clean. Some say not doing it = causes cancer. I
think quite a few non jewish men still do it some later in life for medical
reasons.(seems to be about 500 per year) however the norm would be to not do it
as an afterthought.

It seems that around 12% of boys are circumcised here and claim insurance for = the
operation. This means there are at least 12 % done!!! probably more..... This site
has all the details!! = http://www.cirp.org/library/statistics/Australia/

looking at the trend it seems over the last 5 years circumcision is again rising. Why
this is so im not sure but I would hazard a guess its social and medical rather than
religeous. The fashionable view point was a few years ago that it was barbaric now it
seems there is a counter viewpoint is that there are sound medical reasons for
circumcision.

I would say that this has led to two polarized groups occuring , on one hand there
will be Jewish people and those concerned with medical reasons and then there will be
people like Johnny with the "its barbaric" view point. But more to the point there is
a very large group of people in the country with the opinion that " your business is
your business" and you make your own decision. Among these people will be those who
do it from there own informed decision on medical grounds and those who couldent care
less one way or the other . In any event there is little social stigma either way due
to the fact that most Australians are generous in belief with not interfering in
other peoples business.

And a quick glans, sorry glance, at http://www.boystoo.com/history/statistics.htm shows 'Many confuse the newborn circumcision rate with the completely different statistic of what percentage of living males have been circumcised. The two figures are different; for example, the newborn circumcision rate in Australia is about 10%, but close to 50% of all living males in Australia have been circumcised.'
