Default Carpenter Practical Test

Hi
I am a Carpentry & Joinery Lecture Assessor and Internal verifier for a local college in west Yorkshire, just sent off the vetassess application to my agent.
I initially applied to the TRA in September 07, unfortunately because of the vast amount of applications I was advised to resubmit my application to vetassess,
still awaiting results from the 1st qualification & reference assessment.
however I have done a little bit of research on the practical Carpenter assessment, the information that I have researched so far, is that the assessors will be asking you a series of underpinning knowledge questions,
this is standard question and answers, they will ask you to identify a range of hand and power tools, mark out and assemble a saw horse, stud partion wall,
hip roof, sharpen chisels, & general health & Safety.
PS if any one has anymore information about the practical assessments could they please pass it on many thanks Paul

Just a thought!
Because Carpentry & joinery Branches out in to a variety of Carpentry specialist firms ie, shop fitting, kitchen fitters, 1st & 2nd fixing, Timber framed house specialists etc. you might want to consider setting up a few small practical tests such as: rod drawings, mark out and assemble a small hip roof, saw horse etc. familiarize yourself with roofing geometry ect if need be refer to your old portfolio notes. books to consider, Carpentry & Joinery 2nd edition Peter bret, Davi R. Bates carpentry & Joinery Book 1
Good Luck Paul

Regarding the Practical Test:
Apparently according to my agent, Vetassess could test anyone of us on anything they feel is a weakness, the only thing I can suggest is be well prepared, I’m hoping to do my skills test in April if my paperwork goes through ok, has anybody else got any concerns,
Regards Paul

hi paul

my Oh is a joiner so the information have posted is fab. we are still getting all the information together for the paper based at the mo. been a bit hard as OH is self employed and C&G have lost one of his unit cert. (well OH lost the first one) so getting refs and stuff is a bit complicated. (hoping not to go to an agent)

Oh is worrying a little as it doesnt look as easy for carpenters as some other trades as your job can entail anything.

wish you luck any info on this would be very much appreciated.

Hi Cheryl
Have a look at this site: www.fmb.org.uk/industry/citb.asp
This is the Building Engineering Services for CITB, You could try contacting them with his CITB registration number, if your lucky they should be able to
send you a copy, there is usually a small fee for re issuing Certificates.
PS Regarding references: cross reference with all of the Vetassess criteria for a Carpenter, in other words you need to put as much information down in your references as possible stating how he actually goes about completing Carpentry Jobs, and the type of tools he would use, materials etc.
Hope this helps: Paul

It doesn’t look like I will make it for the practical in April, they are saying four weeks before I hear anything about the Qualification assessment, I might be cutting it a bit fine, but you never know, looks like it will be held in Accrington, there is a cut off date, which is the 26th February 2008. This is as per Vetassess Web Site! Hope everything goes ok for the Joiners who have managed to secure a place. PS have a practice at some mini rig tests if you are concerned.
Regards Paul

use the following as a guideline when writing your references, this is the aussie immigrations dept`s interpretation of a "tradesperson"

What are tradespeople in Australia expected to be capable of?
You must demonstrate that you are capable of doing the broad range of work normally done by, and to the same level of skill as, a tradesperson trained in Australia.

The work of a tradesperson includes:

reading work instructions and technical drawings common to the trade;
planning independently the method and order of doing a job;
using measuring instruments correctly;
marking out, laying out and setting up trade work;
selecting appropriate materials, tools, machines and equipment;
making appropriate settings on tools, machines and equipment;
performing trade work independently; and
checking and /or testing work against established standards.
You must also demonstrate that you have adequate background/theoretical knowledge.

( easist way is to write your own and get your employers to copy it onto their headed paper )
