Can anyone help me with a health question?
Hi
We are considering moving to Australia to be with my daughter & grandchildren on a 173 or 143 (haven't as yet decided which
One of my main concerns is health. I know we have to have medicals but, I am classed as disabled due to severe Arthritis, I am not in a wheelchair but do have mobility issues. How strinent is the medical and could I be turned down on the grounds of disability.
I could really use some sound advice on this thanks

Unfortunately this is quite a tricky one for us non-professional posters, medical questions usually are.
The Australian government use the medical to determine whether the applicant is going to cost the tax payer more than a certain amount in the next five or so years. That amount is quite low at the moment, about $20k I believe.
I definitely think you should not try to handle your application by yourself in view of the condition. A migration agent would firstly be able to provide some insight as to your chances of succcess, an insight that you really are not going to get from the forum. Also, if they believe it is manageable they can help you to prepare your case in the best possible light.
George Lombard, who posts on here has a doctor working with him and he might be somebody you could speak to about acting on your behalf. I have also heard the name Peter Bollard as an agent that specialises in immigration when there are potentially medical issues (google him).
Good luck with everything.

Having said that, I am now waiting for a CO and am due to have my medical again. I haven't deteriorated and hopefully all will be well although obviously nothing is guaranteed as they might have changed the goal posts since last year. The criteria seems to be if you are self sufficient and able to take care of yourself and not cost the Australian government much money and will be able to for the next 5/10years you should be okay. However you will need this from your doctor and consultant. Like I have said, I hope to pass again, but hey nothing is sure. Good luck and go for it !!!

Definitely get on to Peter Bollard, he's very good at finding solutions for medical problems and visas. As Bermuda says, George Lombard is also very highly regarded.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Hi, I am going through the CPV 143 at the moment and I am in a wheelchair due to M.S. A couple of years ago, my son paid over $4500 to an Australian agent who told him, I am very unlikely to pass my medicals due to my disability. I put a thread on PIO and a lovely lady "Gollywobbler" helped me apply alone and she had got a 143 for her elderly Mum a few years earlier. She suggested we frontload the medicals, getting all relevent doctors and consultants letter as to my current condition. I did this last April and had my medicals early. A few weeks later I had an e-mail to say my medicals had been met. In other words I passed without any problem .

Thanks for your reply's and good advice. I do appreciate the fact that there are agents who process visas (my daughter used a very good one.
If we do decide to emigrate (still not 100% as I still have a son in the UK )This is why we are perhaps considering the 173 first to go out there for a couple of years then if we feel it is for us we would then (upgrade for want of a better word!) to the 143 which of course would mean another medical.
Yomvard I especially appreciate your reply. It sounds to me that your problems far exceed mine. I am fairly self-sufficient. I do still work part time (by choice) as it keeps me going.
My real concern was the fact that I am 'registered disabled' and my husband is my carer (for the things I cant do for myself). Obviously I know that if we did go to Australia I will not get the allowances I get now but that is not the issue.
Do you mind me asking Yomvard what is the CO you are now applying for if you already have the 143 and why do you have to have another medical?
Whatever it is Yomvard I do wish you all the luck in the world .
Is there anyway I can contact 'Gollywobbler' on PIO privately? Perhaps you could PM me. I really appreciate everyone's help.

If you wish to communicate with members of other forums, or discuss those forums, I'm afraid you will need to do it on there. The person you wish to contact has not been a member of this site for some years and is aware she is no longer welcome here.

I'm so sorry I wasn't aware of that being a new member. I apologise if I have broken any rules, it was not my intension to do that. I have had some really good help from here.
Have I compromised my membership of this site?

No I am waiting for a Case Officer to start assessing my 143visa. I have to have another medical as the one I frontloaded last year is only valid for one year so of course it has expired. I frontloaded to see how things went as it is no good waiting 15-18 months of worry if there really is no chance of a visa anyway, so we paid to have an extra last year. All it was to see if there was a chance as the agent said I probably would not pass the medical so no visa. She still may be right yet !!

Sorry, I wasn't aware of this either. I thought both were sister websites to help with any problems.

I'm slowly picking up the lingo (CO Case Officer ).
I understand why you did what you did. I contacted an agent 'on speck' and they told me the same thing i.e. I wouldn't pass a medical which is why I found and posted here so your reply, very well intended, was very helpful to me
I'll keep it all goes well for you

Good luck with your visas, and as they both involve medical issues I really would echo Moneypenny's advice earlier - both of the agents she mentions are very highly regarded in medical matters

Re: Can anyone help me with a health question?
You're both fine and we are glad to have you as members of BE. However the other website is not a "sister" forum - it is completely independent, run by totally different people. No problem at all with people being members of both sites, and many posters are, but there's a kind-of unspoken forum etiquette whereby we don't discuss goings-on on other fourms, and we expect the same courtesy in return.

Re: Can anyone help me with a health question?
They will help at any time, they have both regularly been used because someone had previously either been turned down or are mid way through an application and then come up against a problem. George and others have always, until recently for certain reasons, been very helpful with general free advice on here for anyone thinking about a move to Australia. Obviously detailed personal advice has to be done direct and not via the forum.

Re: Can anyone help me with a health question?
They can help you to prepare your medical information in such a way that HOC will look at it in the most favourable light. If medicals are failed then they might be able to help prepare an appeal, but it would be better to try and avoid that in the first place with a well prepared application.
