Re: business visa 163 anyone got a visa yet?
Hi Bunbury is our destination choice. We have family there and also Perth. Business choice... Wholesale/distributor probably, we shall see whats available when we get the visa. A bit worried about stories we have seen where 'Cashed-up Poms' are taken for a ride buying a no-good business. Any help here guys? What has been your experience?
Cheers

There are a lot of businesses around that are targeted at people who want to have a business purely to get their family in and don't really care if it makes money or not - but they are fairly obvious. Real businesses with assets
and a future are around - but you do need to look for them. I'll see if I can find the names of bona fide business agents

Thanks so much for your reply.
Our business here is up for sale via a broker and we have been having meetings with potential purchasers. Our house is up for sale and had some viewings - no takers yet. Boat and classic car already sold. Daughter down for two schools in Aus, deposits paid and places waiting for her. It seems we have lots of balls up in the air, just waiting for CO and Visa. It's just so frustrating having our destiny in someone else's hands! We are so used to having our British passport and the freedom to come and go in the world as we please. Really sobering and scary that although we comply with all the criteria, Aus might decide NO or something like failing a medical could get in the way! We see-saw from excitement to indignation about whether Aus wants us or not. We just want to go and get on with our lives. Come on Aus, hurry up and let us in pls.
Apologies for sounding impatient especially when there are lots of Skilled list applicants really cheesed off at the moment, but we are looking forward to it so much and - guess what - its raining here again.....

Hi, Thanks for the supportive comments. We've been selling loads of stuff on eBay, clearing out the loft and garage. Amazing amount of stuff gone to charity shops and local dump !! Does anyone know what stuff is not allowed in a container for shipping to Oz - daughter wants a Lava Lamp for Christmas but I'm worried about liquids in container. Cheers, JLD

It starts with no dry flowers/grasses etc, no untreated wood, no mud or dirt on bikes or garden tools or sporting equipment.
They even took Joyce's new horse riding crop because they thought it may have been in contact with a horse. They took some elaborate Xmas decorations because they had cones in.
enjoy

Are those of you who employ aware of the changes introduced by the government which come into place as of 1st July 2010. If you and your staff do not have have an ENTERPRISE BARGAINING AGREEMENT in place prior to 1st January 2010 the employer will have the following increases to their wage bill (transitioned over 5 years)
Casual employees: daily 2% increase, + an extra 10% Saturdays, and an extra 75% Sundays (these are over and above the current penalty rates and do not include CPI increases)
Permanent / Permanent Part time: 50% increase on Sundays (these are over and above the current penalty rates )
Base wage increase depending on responsibility
The transition starts 1 July 2010 20% per year fo 5 years.
An ENTERPRISE BARGAINING AGREEMENT (EBA) will enable employers to continue to pay under current the NAPSA award for the next 4 years. It may also offer Reduced Casual rates, Reduced Saturday & Sunday hours, the ability to transfer your EBA to the new owners on the sale of your business, and after 4 years the EBA willcontinue to operate until cancelled by either the business owner or an employee.
I have calculated that my wage bill will increase by $35,000.00 if my staff do not sign EBA's - this applies to all employers so dont think it will not affect your bottom line, the clock is ticking!!
Also anyone coming over to look at businesses for sale check if they have an EBA in place as this will need to be taken into account when calculating the costs of running the business and its profitability.

This all kicked in 1st January. A couple of retail businesses in my shopping centre are now not opening Sundays because of the higher costs - I think we will continue trading 7 days at the moment but the extra costs of wages and super do hurt.
Anyone looking at figures for a business for sale should ask the vendor for new staff costings as historic figures will not show this.
Oh yeah - Happy new year all!

Re: business visa 163 anyone got a visa yet?
We are just wondering if anyone may be able to answer our question?
We will be entering Australia later this year on a 163 business visa. May have
sold business but they do not want to buy building for 2 years so we will be earning rent from this in the UK them will transfer to Australia. How will we be taxed on money coming in?
Thanks for any help.

(These are general observations: please obtain a written opinion before committing to a tax mitigation strategy.)
163 visa = temporary residency visa => UK source rental income will be exempt in Australia, but will be subject to UK income tax.
Note that capital gains arising on a UK disposal are also exempt from tax in Australia if they arise while you are in Australia as a 163 visaholder. Ensure the disposal takes place in a UK tax year when you are never resident or ordinarily resident though.
Best regards.
