Hi John

Please tell me , why you left the printing industry? Are things that bad in Brisbane
for that line of work? Curious as hubby is a mac operator in the printing industry
and we were thinking of heading to Brisbane when the visa is issued.

Till later Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Your hubby shouldn't have to much difficulty finding work here in Brissy. That said,
the printing industry (as is anywhere?) is extremely cut-throat and price-driven.
Advice - try and get a position in a large printing company. Standalone prepress
companies are struggling against the inhouse prepress studios, which are happy to cop
a small loss on the prepress component of a print job - just to win the print! Also
even though the cost of living is low in Queensland - so are wages and salaries.
Expect around $35,000 p.a. as a Mac Operator.

HTH, John

Hi Annie,

Not me personally - but I could recommend someone for you. The Brisbane bayside, in
particularly the Redlands area is a great place to settle - you will love it here. If
you email me at:

[email protected]

but remove "only" from the address first, I will reply with my contact details -

Cheers, John

Hi John

Could you possibly give me some names of the larger print companies that we
could approach? As for renting , what can one expect to pay in the Wellington
Point and surrounds? Do you know what if any references are usually required for
migrants to rent?

Thanks a mill Jenny

Hey Jenny,

Larger printing companies - Inprint (in Boondall), PNP Print (in Zillmere), Scanlons
(in Virginia), Platypus (in Stafford), and GoPrint (in Woolloongabba).

Larger prepress companies worth looking at - PEP Central (in New Farm), Graphic
Skills (Fortitude Valley), Colour Chiefs (not sure exactly where these guys are - but
they'll be in the telephone directory) and Colour Reproductions (in Coorparoo).

Unfortunately most of these are on Brisbane's northside - making for a bit of a drive
if you're coming from Wellington Point. I am finishing up at Inprint, where it takes
around 40 to 45 minutes drive each way from home - which is Wellington Point.

If you have any references - bring them. Our experience is that if you are migrants
and have no local history, but seem to be a respectable family with enough funds to
make rent for a minimum lease period of say 6 months, it shouldn't be too hard
getting a place.

Expect to pay between $250 and $280 week for a reasonable 3 or 4 bedroom house in
Wellington Point, Ormiston or Cleveland. Alexandra Hills and Capalaba are cheaper.

Cheers, John

Hi John. Like one of your other messages earlier I also am in prepress on the macs. However i tend to use a specialist program called Artpro and have knowledge of workflows and rips etc. Would this help or hinder me and do you have any names of prepress studios for me to look at. Don't know if it will be of assistance to you but I made rental enquiries
from a Brisbane northside real estate agent for friends considering
emigrating and was advised to tell them to either bring proof of prior
property ownership in UK; or rental receipts from over there. Also any
references from UK if they had rented over there between selling house and
actually leaving UK. We are also prepared to give local reference on their
behalf. Good luck with your move.
