basic visa costs

how much is visa to become permanent residents?
is that payable each? i.e family of 4. kids will be 16 and 17 tho

from what i can gather there is no visa available that just allows you to move there working or not?
i.e if you get in with a work visa but are out of work you must leave ?

It is just one visa charge, as you will all be going in under the same PR visa.

Your kids will be OK until they are 18, and then under certain circumstances once they turn 18. Its all in the above link anyway.

If you have a skill on the list and can make the minimum points for a skilled visa it is a permanent one. The application fee is for everyone included on your application, which would mean your spouse and migrating children. Medicals and police checks are payable x4, though. You will need to have your skills assessed in order to apply for a skilled visa, which is another charge. Depending on what skills assessing authority you need to use it ranges from a couple of hundred dollars to a couple of thousand.

Take a good long read of www.immi.gov.au booklet 6 for skilled visas. There is a visa wizard at the above website where you can look to see whether you might be eligible in the first place. Alternately, you can try talking to a registered migration agent. Most give a free initial consultation.

This applies to some sponsored visas such as the 457, but is not true of permanent residency visas.
