Australian driving licence
Im off to Australia to live in April and I wondered what I have to take my driving
test again when I get out there, because my English driving licence is not recognized
in Aussie!! Can anyone confirm this??? Also what do I do about the tax man here

It depends what you mean by 'recognised.' Rules are different for the different
states and territories.
QLD and WA will let you get a local licence simply by passing a theory test. In the
other states you will also need to do a practical test (although the ACT allows you
to build up a log of driving lessons instead) but as long as you have held an
overseas licence for a few years you will not be subject to probationary drivers
restrictions.
When you get an Australian licence, they should simply endorse your UK one to
invalidate it in Australia (the process in NSW at least) rather than confiscating it.
As for the tax man, which one, UK or Australia? You may need to get someone who knows
both financial systems to look at your investments, pensions etc to make sure you
don't fall foul of Australian tax rules. Not used him myself, but you could try Alan

Basically yes, they asked me what the various letters meant, I also have to answer 5
extra motorcycle highway code questions to get my bike license.

I was given a certificate of competancy (ie a pass) which I took down to the dept of transport on Tuesday, I had to give them my U.K. drivers licence (grrrr) and $10 to take the photo for my licence and a further $22 for each year I wanted it to be valid for.
Most Aussies I speak to can't believe my U.K. licence was vaild until my 70th birthday.

So my Canadian Class 5 won't be converted to OZ as well? I have to re-take all the
tests again?
I wish our CND Transportation Department will set the same rule, so you Aussies then
realize how annoying it is.

They still have to in the other states/territories, (but can take a course of driving
lessons instead in the ACT).
So you need to check what the situation is in the state/territory you plan to live
in. As for Australians going to Canada, again it's at the mercy of the province they
want to live in.

By the way, VIC does not require UK driving license holders to take a practical test.
