Australian citizenship approved in 1 day!

Australian citizenship approved in 1 day!
I had a citizenship interview with DIMIA Perth on 12/Oct/05. The
officer said I should receive a written response withing 6 weeks. Today
18/Oct/05, I received a letter from the Minister for Citizenship and
Multicultural Affairs advising that my application has been approved.
The letter is dated 13/Oct/05, one day after my interview! I'm glad
that it's been approved but I'm shocked at how fast they approved it.
Yabadabadoooo!!!

In fact Citizenship application is approved at the time of interview
itself. For me the person taking interview said your application has
been approved. But they would confirm the same by letter which is
received a couple of days later. However, one officially becomes a
citizen only when the citizenship cermony takes place.Any how congrats.

Don't they need to assess if you're of "good character"? The officer
never told me my application was approved during interview but she told
me that they need to run a police check and I believe that's why she
quoted me up to 6 weeks for response. Anyway 24 hours for police check
and written approval is bloody incredible for a government dept :)

DIMIA do an Australian police check online (for citizenship applicants). If it's clear things can get approved very quickly.
If your name shows up on the police check, and they have to take a closer look to ensure it's someone else and not you, then things usually take a few weeks. Similarly, if there's any complication with your application. For example, if you don't have a birth cert, or you arrived as a migrant a long time ago and they have to check paper records.
