Westpac - www.westpac.com.au

Commenwealth bank (not sure of website)

would recommend when you land, get tax file number and verify account to jump to HSBC in oz as they dont charge monthly fees.

this is my current way of proposed doing things (changes quite a lot with updates from this site).

Good luck

Paula, I am sure I read on here somewhere that you can set up a HSBC
account in the UK for Oz anyway?

Not sure about HSBC but I know you can with Westpac:

I know they charge $5 per month if you have less then $2500 in the
account but still usefull on a short term basis :)

I opened up an HSBC account from offshore:

http://www.hsbc.com.au/personal/accounts/osa.html should point you in
the right direction.

Cheers Techno,

I will wait for your response from HSBC, before going further.

No worries, I'll post the reply as soon as it comes, ( assuming they do actually reply ).

Kaka,

you'll get a much better deal using someone like Ozforex for currency transfers. It's easier as well.

Just open a bank account at the bank of your choosing here in aus, then transfer sterling funds online to ozforex, they then send the aus dollars to your aus bank account.

cheers

Just filling in the HSBC forms at the moment. Some of the info in here
might help: http://tinyurl.com/j5hhf

Quck version: the account to go for is 'Online Savings' (not just a
savings account despite the name). I phoned my UK bank (First Direct,
which is part of HSBC UK), who sent me the forms. Once I've filled them
in I take them in person to an HSBC branch in the UK and hand them over
the counter along with a $2000 Bank Draft (which HSBC UK can provide)
and 3 forms of ID (inc passport). They take copies and certify
everything, then send it internally to Aus where the app is processed.
I was told 6 - 10 weeks lead time, so I'd better pull my finger out!

Hope this helps...

And just as an extra to this - the AUD$2,000 is required to open the
account but doesn't have to remain in there once the account has been
successfully opened. That said, there's a notable difference in the
interest payable when the balance dips below this figure.

Also, as with any bank account opened offshore, a 10% tax is payable
on interest earned and this will continue to be the case until the
account holder files a TFN (Tax File Number). It'll appear on your
statement as 'withholding tax'. If, once resident, you fail to notify
the bank of the TFN, you'll be charged something insane in tax - 47%?
- something pretty darn high anyway. ...so best not to forget :-)

No idea why they call it 'Online Savings Account' - as I put in
another thread alluded to with the link below, it's something of a
misnomer. It operates just like any regular checking account and when
using EFTPOS here, I can select either 'cheque' or 'savings' - makes
no difference whatosever.

Good to see that HSBC UK are now able to assist with opening offshore
accounts. When I did this 6 years ago, things weren't quite so simple
and I had to file everything offshore directly with HSBC Australia
with the UK version having no idea of the procedure whatsoever. Not a
problem though - all was opened without a hitch and I'm still with the
same bank and still happy with them to date.

Who did you call? When I call HSBC or First Direct they say I cant open an account in Oz, mind you I am not a current HSBC account holder so this might be the reason.

Could you possibly pm me the number you used so I can give it another try?

Thanks

I opened an account with ANZ. Downloaded the form from their website, filled it in and posted it. The account details were back with me in less than 10 days.
