Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection
Hi everyone,

The Australian Government has proposed reforms to the Australian Citizenship programme in order to strengthen the test of Australian citizenship.

The Government is planning to introduce these new changes into the Parliament by the end of 2017. However, all proposed changes that pass in the Parliament will apply to all Citizenship applications received on or after 20 April 2017.

Therefore, we cannot pre-assess how these new proposed changes might affect your Citizenship application or eligibility to apply for Australian Citizenship

We recommend you read more about these proposed changes and how to submit your views on them from our website here: http://www.border.gov.au/.../discus....ship-paper.pdf

Further information on different aspects of the reforms to Australian Citizenship and their impact will be published on our website at Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection in due course.

Thank you.

The government has put DIBP in a very awkward position - they cannot move forward because any changes will apply retrospectively to the 20th April but there's no policy on what the changes will be much less any legislation, just a press release. Legally there's nothing to allow DIBP to hold onto applications and administrative law states they must process applications in a timely manner. Expect them to see DIBP dragged in front of the court if they are required by government to hold onto applications for six months or more.

Politicians only exist to make the voters as miserable as possible, so the voters go to the polls and vote in vain for a next batch hoping their misery will ease, only to find out they've been suckered into a bigger pile of bovine excrement - repeat et. al, ibid, ad nauseum

There was a report on The Guardian website yesterday that quoted Peter Dutton saying that they intend to put the proposed changes to parliament this week, apparently. Oh, and that they believed that Labor should support the changes!

looking at the Australian Parliament website, it seems that the legislation bill is referred to a senate committee
Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017

On 22 June 2017 the Senate referred the Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017 for inquiry and report by 4 September 2017.

The closing date for submissions is 21 July 2017.
I'm not sure how citizenship application will be processed between now and until this bill is voted in Parliament.
