the OP needs to answer that. 'part-time 'term-time' as jensen quotes, could be any number of hours, but normally ties in with the local school holidays for that area. i work 10 hours a week, term time only, which ties in with the LEA (local education authority) dates. (i am not a teacher...lol)

Dear SB,

So there are people who work more when schools are in session? Apart from school administrators, school cooks, etc, I don't know who that would be. Probably I shouldn't be posting this early, obviously brain hasn't engaged.

So what is it that keeps you busy for 10 hpw TTO?

i am nowt be a lowly special needs teaching assistant george, working with a child with Aspergers Syndrome. our local college also does term time only jobs, again administration based. i think the majority of our local authority TTO jobs are admin based again. i presume from what you have said, this type of work isnt available as freely over in australia?

btw, what time is it over there?

Dear SB,

Aspergers Syndrome sounds a challenging role, I'm sure the parents don't think of you like that.

So it's jobs in the education industry which are TTO. Now I get it. Time here is still before 7.30am.

George,

Can I put you out of your misery finally? It can't still be early in
the morning.

TTO jobs can be held by anyone with a considerate employer that
recognises that some people only want to work while their kids are
safely tucked up in school! They don't work in the school holidays
because that's when the kids need looking after. Nothing to do with
education industry jobs, per se.

Wake up.....;-)

Hi Tim,

In fact I'm a TTO employer myself in that sense, I was just confused, pre-coffee. We don't use that phrase here afaik.

Hi all

Sorry, I've been out for a few days! Let me end the confusion here.

MY wife works in the Education Personnel department of our local authority as an HR Advisor to local schools. She works TTO (Term Time Only), so 39 weeks per annum, and part-time, 4 days a week. This means she does 29.6 hours per week for 39 weeks pa, or an average of 22.2 hours per week. She is, however, paid in 12 equal monthly instalments. As someone else mentioned, this is all part of Tony B Liar's "work/life balance" pholosophy.

George, do these numbers look at all worrying? (Thanks for the responses so far!)

JH.

Hi JH,

I'd need to know what her contract says but on the face of it she's working nine months a year, and if that's being going for a few years then she should meet all the recent work experience requirements.

Thanks for the explanation of TTO, we got there in the end without you thanks to SB and TJ.

Cheers,

George Lombard

Just in case anyone was wondering, I received this from our agent this morning:

Apologies for the delay, but I have been in touch with DIMIA and they have
confirmed that they regularly undertake integrity checks to verify/clarify applicant's employment claims AND that they are satisfied with Jo’s work claims.

Huzzah!

On 2006-02-21, Great Cthulhu rose from the deep and compelled George Lombard to exclaim:
    >> My wife has just had a bit of a shock, as the Australian High
    >> Commission has just written to her boss for a reference. Wouldn't
    >> have been a problem, but her boss (who knows what we're planning) is
    >> on maternity leave and is being covered by a temporary boss (who
    >> doesn't!).
    >> Work ructions aside, is it a good sign that they've asked for this
    >> reference? Does it actually move us a step closer?
    > Dear JH,
    > So when you applied you gave a reference for your wife and now Australia
    > House has written to your employer to confirm the reference? Sounds
    > normal, although more commonly they prefer the element of surprise by
    > ringing the referee.
    > So, yes, it's a good sign unless your documentation is bogus :-)

Yikes! Does this mean my present employer will be contacted regarding my
138 application? Cos if they are, I'll be out on my ear :(
