Default ACS Skills Assessment - HND Qualification

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone can advise me on the following...

I've got a BTEC HND in Software Engineering. This was a 2 year, full time course.

Since then, I've had an IT job for just over 7 years.

About 4 years of my experience fits against "Applications and Analyst Programmer", whilst the rest of my experience is in system testing and configuration management.

With the HND qualification and IT experience (is an HND in Software Engineering likely to be a recognised qualification?), am I likely to "pass" the assessment?

Thanks in advance!!

No problem with the HND, it will be recognised and no need for RPL application nor Project reports. You will need to evidence a minimum of 6 years relevant professional IT experience. No problem if it crosses two classifications. So the only danger is if the ACS decide that some of your early experience is not at the required skill standard and they cut you short of the required 6 years. So the early references (as do the current) need to be well prepared with qualitative details. pm me if you would like me to put you in touch with a specialised ACS skills preparation consultant.

Regards

It may help to tell you what I had when I applied for skills assesment at the ACS as an Analyst Programmer.
BTEC HND in Engineering IT
7½ years as an AP, although 3-4 were more in EDI and application integration.

So my HND wasn't entirely relevant, but was still included in the application, I guess yours will be more relevant. My career wasn't always as an AP but this didn't affect the positive assesment I gained.
HTH.

Thanks for the prompt replies!

One other thing I thought of ... is it worth including certificates showing exams passed at the end of training courses, for example a Learning Tree Jave course, and if it is - should I get it certified?

Thanks again.

I never did exams at the end of courses, but included my attendance certificates for courses, so it probably won't hust to include exam passes (and attendance), and YES they MUST be certified.

Hope this helps...

Yes

It is important to show CPD by way of courses completed/attended along the way.

I've done a HNC Computing at Greenwich Uni and have been advised by my agent that I need to do the RPL, which is nearly complete now.

Obviously a HND is better than a HNC, but is a RPL necessary if you have a HNC?

PS. My HNC was 2 years part time.

Not at all - the HNC will be recognised by ACS as equivalent to an AQF Diploma - maybe the worde Certificate made yoru agant presume it would not have Australian Diploma equivalence. If your HNC was not completed 6 years ago or more, ACS may require 2 projec treports relating to pre HNC ecperience. You also need only 6 years of relevant IT experience not 8 years

Tony,

Thanks for this info. This is very interesting. I will go back to my agent and enquire why I am doing the RPL. My HNC was completed in June 2000. Ive got 7.5 years experience as an analyst programmer.

My RPL has been sent to my agent to see if its up to standard. I am expecting them to send it back for updates before sending it off to ACS. Seems like it's too late now as I have done all the hard work in the RPL's compilation.

Maybe with any luck ACS will see my HNC and the fact that I have done an RPL and give me 100 points for the extra effort....maybe not.

If you have got this far with the RPL then no harm in submitting everything as an RPL - presume you will be doing the two project reports as well. Although the RPL is an assessment on whether you have experience and skills and compoetencies in lieu of not having an IT HNC, it may help your case if some of the required 6 years experience is borderline - the extra info in the RPL and 2 project reports could swing it for you.

Regards

I'm a bit confused now. I've got a BTEC HNC in Software Engineering (1994). This was a one year full time course. Since then I've had 11 years professional experience.

I've also been advised by my migration agent that I need to complete an RPL application. Given the previous comments it seems that RPL is not necessary as I'd meet GROUP B criteria. I have no problems with compiling the RPL report but this means that my application will be delayed by probably 2 months???

Yes, as I said above, no need for RPL, just well prepared detailed references of 6 years or more showing you as an IT professional.

Tony,

If the ACS decides that some of your early experience, say 6 months, doesn't meet the criteria, they fail you, can you reapply in say 6 months time, when you have got the experience back up to the 6 years again?

Thanks,
B

That's right Brutus, pretty much guaranteed if you are in the same position that they have already recognised as part of the 5 and a half years.
