Hi My name is Newton. I'm from Brazil. I have a Bachelor and a Master Degree in PHYSICS,
but my work experience is in IT. I 've visited the site of ACS (www.acs.org.au) and
copy-pasted the following fragment: -----------begin of
fragment------------------------------------------------------------ SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
FOR VISA PURPOSES .......
a.. an overseas qualification assessed as being comparable to an Australian Bachelor
degree, or Graduate Diploma, or higher qualification, with a major in information
technology (see examples below). Examples of relevant field include Applied Science
(Computing) Applied Science (Computer Science) Applied Science (Information Systems)
Business (Data Processing) (old) Business (Electronic Data Processing) (old) Business
(Information Systems) Computer Science Computer Science Engineering Information
Information Systems Information Technology Management Information Systems Software
Engineering

--------------------------end of
fragment--------------------------------------------------------

You can see my dilemma: There is not a sign of PHYSICS in the list of examples. Later I
found the following:

--------------------begin of
fragment------------------------------------------------------------

3.2 Potentially Suitable RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)
3.1.1 An applicant who has limited or no qualifications but who has extensive and varied
experience plus supporting professional development education may refer certified
documentation to the ACS for evaluation by the Society.
3.2.2 The ACS will decide which level of qualification is appropriate and based on this
advice, an assessing officer can decide the appropriate Group. A fee of A$400* is
charged for this service.

----------------end of
fragment----------------------------------------------------------------- I am
wondering if my skills could be positively assessed this way. I've been working for 5
years as a permanent staff MCT (Microsoft Certifified Trainer) in a CTEC in Brazil. I
have the following Microsoft Certifications: MCP, MCP+I, MCP+SB, MCSE, MCSE+I, MCSD,
MCDBA, MCT. Can someone give me some advise? I'm waiting anxiously for a reply. Thank
you. Newton Godoy.

Hi Newton

My name is also Newton and I'm from Australia .

On the basis of the information you have provided it appears that you would have a
reasonable case to put to the ACS - either based on work experience, or if you have IT
subjects in your physics degrees based on that and the work experience.

However, the actual outcome would depend on the details of your qualifivcations and
experience and on how the evidence is presented to ACS.

We assist people with their skills assessment applications - by providing firmer advice on
the chances of a successful application and if a case has merit by assisting prepare the
application and then managing it through the process.

We charge a fee for those services.

We can't influence the assessment process, but we can assist you put your case forward in
a way that best demonstrates your claims.

If you would like more information feel free to email me direct.

Regards

Hi Newton (Godoy),

Round about the houses - but - the ACS normally accept
British Computer Society members (only at Fellow or Chartered IT Professional levels).

They have similar rules, but you can also look at the BCS website, which gives useful info. & you can email them to ask the same query. They usually advise for free, but are not ACS specialists of course.
http://www.bcs.org/

The point being, if asked, you'll need to be able to prove that your degree that you had a major computing component (ie. your syllabus, thesis, projects etc.). A reference from your Uni in this respect will help.

It's important how you shade your info based upon the "Title" of the role you intend to apply under (see SOL). Your approval will depend upon what you're selling yourself as!

Good luck

Hi Newton,

No problem, as soon as you've got six years you'll qualify on the basis of your MCSE or MCSD under Group B. If you don't have 30% of your degree in IT subjects, including a "major", forget it. Physics isn't IT - although it may involve many computational subjects and other subjects with clear relevance, the only "pure" subjects which you can claim outside those which are obviously IT are those coming under the heading "discrete mathematics" - see the CBOK on the ACS website, and even then you couldn't claim a major in maths, but might be able to use it to reach an acceptable percentage.

Cheers,

George Lombard

Cant really help on any advice - but, best of luck either way.

I went down the RPL route and it was a pain. Like sitting an exam which you know the answers to but are sort of unsure what the questions are !!

I don't know if anyone has noticed but this thread is over 4 years old and hence I've closed it.
