457 VISA QUESTIONS

Hi, I hope someone can answer this one for me. When looking for an employer in Australia to sponsor you on the 457 visa do you have to look for a job that you are already doing in UK at present time. IE. My husband works for Royal Bank of Scotland and has lots of skills in different departments, at the moment he works in I.T. but he has significant work experience in the Fraud department where he came from originally (3 years ago). Can he look at jobs in the Fraud area of banking?

Also can he only look for work that is still under the skilled occupation list or can he look for whatever work he wants?

Hope that makes sense.

Hi Caroline,

He's able to be sponsored for any job on the list of eligible 457 occupations that he has the skills to perform - your sponsor would know how to assess that and as a rule of thumb I would be nervous without some sort of relevant qualification or at least three years of experience in the particular field. Some sponsors will consider an occupational trainee visa which comes with lower expectations but one drawback with that is often that a spouse isn't eligible for employment rights.

Cheers,

Hi George,

Thanks for replying. OK, so as long as he is on the list he can apply for jobs under certain occupations. Is that even if he hasnt done that side of work for 3 years? He has about 6 years experience in Fraud, but has since moved into the I.T. side of his department 3 years ago?

I cant see a Fraud type job specifically on the list, but have found this one.. Specialist Managers (Not Elsewhere Classified). I wonder if this could fall into the catagory we are looking for?

I believe (but could be wrong, so you are best off talking to an agent) that you need a degree to get any type of managers job. Not that it says you need one, but that they have that many people apply for skills acessments that they can be really choosy.
