Default 457 then permanent visa?

if i were to go to australia as a nurse on a 457 visa, how likely is it to then apply for a permanent visa when out there.
if this is feasable:
1. how soon can an application be lodged when in the country
2. do you need to get medicals etc re done.

thanks peeps

You can start the process whenever you like. Many nurses apply for the PR visa before even stepping foot in Australia.

you start when eligible, before or after entry makes no difference. You are not saying whether it would be an independent or a sponsored PR, so there could be some specifics with the process, depending on what visa you apply for.

medicals for a temporary and for the permanent visas are typically different (temp's are less exhaustive and may be insufficient for the perm application), then with the current processing times your first set would almost certainly expire before your second application will see the light of a day. I'd say yes, you will almost definitely have to re-do the medicals when asked by your case officer.

Surely meds for anyone going into the medical profession is as 'exhaustive' as those for PR?

Yes for doctors and nurses the medical is the same for 457 and pr but not for all health care professionals.
