I think you need a visa to enter NZ and a permit to take up work. Where is Happy NZ? ;)

Thanks Yotty. So I could go over as a visitor and get permit over there or apply for both before leaving the Uk so I can start work straight away? What would be lovely would be getting PR before leaving but that would require a miracle as we are hoping to leave 07/07/08.If I have permanent work how long should I apply for the permit for?

The difference in a nutshell is
A Visa is required to enter the country
a Permit is required to legally stay in the country. Technically if you go abroad/ leave Nz your "permit" expires and then you need to have a valid "visa" to get back into the country and be given a (technically) new "permit". In practise it doesnt make any difference, except you need to make sure your visa is always valid before leaving NZ even for a holiday.

You need a work permit to stay in Nz and work. Even if you left on the 7th you would not be able to start working until your work permit was approved. i am not sure what you would need to do to change your application from one from outside of NZ (which sounds like the one thats been selected) to one from inside NZ. I dont know how long it will take to get a work permit once in NZ.

You can go to NZ and apply there, but bear in mind you will be entering NZ without any work permit (ie as a visitor) so will have to show an outward/ return ticket.

Work permits have a defined length, mine was for 2 years. Permanent residency applications dont have a time limit associated with them.
