Timescales once residence visa is granted before residence needs to be taken up

Hi,

Applying for a Parents Visa only in the early stages at the moment but does anyone know how long an offer offer of residence lasts once it has been made. I have looked at the various sections but am a little unclear

I believe most visa's have to actvated within 12mths of start date
