Thank you!

By declare, this is so the aithorities can prove you arent money laundering or carrying the proceeds of crime, and most customs, if they suspect this, will confiscate it. You should attempt to carry proof that it was honestly obtained, as simple as bank statements from months ago, or proof of selling an investment or similar, might save sone heartache. Also, always declare it, there are fines penalties, jail even in some places for not doing it [some of those customs pooches are trained to sniff money, not just drugs !]

I can confirm that there are money dogs at AKL. Husband got stopped when he took out £300 at the cashpoint the previous day and shoved it into his pocket :)

For your own safety and for peace of mind why not use one of the money transfer companies, then you are not carrying cash you really do not want to lose. Far simpler and so much safer.

The regulatory framework in place for the money transfer companies unlike banks is not particularly good in most countries including UK, so whilst it is safer in a way not to carry cash it is safer in a way to carry cash. Effectively if an FX broker manages to go bust whilst holding your money you could have an issue but practically speaking they will be holding it for very long hopefully.
