Teaching Qualification and Immigration
Hi Folks, how's things?
Wondering if anyone could help us, we have recently submitted a skills assessment for Australia for my wife as a primary school teacher.
She completed her qualification on a SCITT programme which is a school centred initial tracher training programme and has been working as a primary school teacher for the past three years.
The Australian teaching assessors have came back to say that they do not recognise her qualification as it was classroom based.
We are now thinking of applying for New Zealand and were wondering what the assessment criteria involves?...if its the same as Australia then there wouldnt be much point of applying....
MY wife also has a 3 year BA Honours bachelors degree in Communication and Business studies which she completed in the University of Ulster, just
wondering if anyone could give us any pointers or help on how we can get to NZ.

I would contact the Teachers Council http://www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz/contact.stm
as I heard a rumour whilst on teacher training at the University of Canterbury last year, that there were changes coming in to accept the school based training from the UK. (Which was a little annoying for the qualified teachers from the UK who were doing the 1 year Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in order to work over here!)

I don't know anything about specific qualifications and or visas other than there are students from other countries for example USA, SA and Zimbabwe doing the 3 year teaching training degree here as their qualifications aren't recognised although they were teaching in schools.
Teachers aren't on the skills shortage lists either which I assume makes a difference to your visa application but I didn't get in that way so I wouldn't know.
Sorry to put a dampner on things but only 20% of students who finished the 3 year degree here last year have got jobs and there are often over 100 applicants in alot of places.
Just make sure you have some other way of earning a living if you can get a visa as teaching is certainly not an easy route at the moment here so you may find yourself out of work.
