Skills verification

Hi,

Both my partner and I wish to move to New Zealand in May provided we
both get jobs there. As we will be both leaving jobs here in London if we are
indeed sucessful in finding work the move will be for good. So we are trying
to get as much information with regard to EOI etc as we can before we make the leap.

My question is my partner has ten years experience in administration
and I have twelve years in sign making (six years of which were running my own business). We will both come with letters and documents to prove our
experience. Both jobs are listed as skills by ANZSCO as skills.

Do we need to get these skills assessed by someone before submiting our paperwork to ITA?

Hope some one can help.
Many Thanks

Tom

Re: Skills verification

Hi

to answer your question. We will not be submitting our EOIs until
one or both of us is offered a job. We are in London at present and
will be going in New Zealand in May all things going well.
We are defacto partners and we need a job offer to have enough
points. But worried about skills verification once we come to the point
of putting in our EOIs.

thanks

Re: Skills verification

Ok, to answer your question we really need to know which occupations on the Skills Shortage Lists you would migrate under and what qualifications you hold to compare withe the requirements stated on the lists, that together with proveable experience can be all that is required but to help a bit more info is needed please...

Tom

As Simonsi states, that really does depend on what your qualifications are & where you obtained them. What trade quals do you have or is it by work experience?

Signwriter is seen as skilled but is not in shortage here in NZ. An NZ employer will have to prove that there is no suitably qualified NZ resident or citizen that could fill that vacancy.

Who is to be the principle applicant ?

Hi Bevs and Simsonsi,

Thank you very much for the replies. To answer briefly we are just at the start of this long process. My partner currently works for the city of London doing administration work, it is a low level civil service position (she doesn't mind me saying that!) has eight years experience. Mine is all on the job experience provable +12 years.

Not sure yet who should be the principal - do not even know how to decide that!! (yet).

Yes we are hanging on the hope a job will be advertised for a few weeks
and no one suitable there will apply for the position.

Maybe a bit hopeful?

(I am Irish she is South African).

Use the points indicator on the NZIS website for the Skilled Migrant Catagory, try putting in all your variables and see which gives the most points...

Hmmm, I think it is a bit more involved for the employer than that, also be prepared for many employers to just not want to get involved with NZIS and possibly not to want to talk to you without a visa or being in NZ for interview and ready to go....

Hi Simonsi,

Thank you again for your help. I guess it comes down to someone
taking a chance and willing to go through some hoops for one of us.
Unlikely as that is.

We talked about it tonight we will start applying for jobs at the start
of April and the take two weeks holiday in NZ mid May.

Hopefully at least we will get to shake some hands and perhaps make
an impression with a few people even if we do not get an offer.

We will not be burning any bridges here until at least one of us gets a job.

:fingerscrossed:

Re: Skills verification

I think that what Simonsi means is that it isn't just down to the employer.
They will need to show more than a few adverts. They will need to show applicants and training. Also, NZ will do a labour market test to see who in that area could take that work or be trained for it. They won't just rely on the NZ employers word for it.

Not trying to put you off in any way. Just be prepared.

Admin !
What sort of admin. You say it is ANZSCO listed. Which occupation please?

Re: Skills verification

Hi Bevs,

I must admit I am a bit more pessimistic after reading your post.

As for our other option as principal:

My partner is either under group 5 - clerical and administrative
worker (she has a diploma in business management and admin)
or a 53 - clerical worker under ANZSCO. We are unsure.

She has worked in a hospital in South Africa as an administrative clerk
also is currently employed by the city of London as an administrative
clerk.

My work is skilled and in some countries you have to undergo an
an apprenticeship however there is no reason why someone off the
street could be trained up which does not bode well. Although I am
very good and with twelve years would be attractive to most
employers.

Not sure what to do now!

Thank you again. Any further help would be appreciated.

Re: Skills verification

What you do is start blanket covering any possible NZ employer. If you get a job offer, it's then :fingerscrossed: NZIS will approve it. Nothing ventured. Nothing gained.

Here is a list of occupations seen as skilled by NZIS . Is her occupation on that list?

If not, then you would be main applicant as your occupation is seen as skilled.

I'm unsure how you would gain points for the skill though as you have no C&G quals etc. for NZIS to assess. I'm also unsure if NZQA would assess on simply work experience.

Maybe someone else knows more about this. Anyone?

There is a vacancy on Trademe at the moment ( click the link)

I know it says one must have PR or a valid work permit. This is something you will see on all the vacancy adverts. It will be up to you to educate the prospective employer that it is a job offer first and then the work visa/permit. Many employers don't understand this.

Re: Skills verification

Hi Bev,

Yes it looks like you are right I am on the NZIS list she is not.
I would therefore be the principal applicant.

I have no C&G or formal qualification however there is no such thing
in most countries in signwriting - experience is everything.

Therefore as I began in my post is there any external body such as
anzso who could verify my skill. I will have documents to prove my
work experience.

However before I come before the NZQA I want to put my best foot forward.
So I have what they need to make it easier for them to accept me.
Thank you for the job link and all the help. Maybe someone will have the answer.

Re: Skills verification

Is there a signwriters professional association or trade body etc in the UK or NZ that may be able to help assess you???

Re: Skills verification

There is NZSDA

Re: Skills verification

Hi Bevs,

Thank you again for your help. I looked at the site and it is
really a private association for New Zealand sign writers.
Firstly I do not think they could give me any type of award
because I am not operating in NZ and secondly associations like
this would have no official power. We have similar here.

However I just may have the solution! to back proof of my skill
:D

Around 5 years ago I applied for residency in Australia but could
not take the final steps because of circumstances at home.

The first thing Australia needed was me to prove my skill and after
three months I recieved certification from the TRA (trades recognition
australia) This is an official government body. I sent them all the documents proving my experience which took a long time and much effort.

I have emailed the TRA and they have said it is possible to send me a copy
of my award. Although a separate country it would have some weight along with whatever documents I bring myself to NZ because of the countries close relationship.

Hopefully that will be enough.

Many thanks again for your help in this thread it very appreciated and I
am very happy and thankful with all the replies I got.

Tom
