My brother in law had a similar situation with OZ. He was brought over to the UK as a baby by his parents. He has been educated, worked and married in the UK. About 5 years ago they decided to go abroad for the first time and realised he had no passports, UK or OZ. He was allowed a temporary UK visa to go to Spain. When in Spain they went for a day trip to Gibraltar where he was refused entry. He had to sit on the Spanish side of the border whilst all the family had a trip to Gib. (never bothered him, he found a little Spanish bar and got leathered!).
Anyway, when they returned to the UK he made enquiries as to his citizenship. He was told he was, in reallity, an OZ. UK immigration would not issue him a UK passport until he could prove who he was. He had no birth certificate so couldn,t apply for a copy in the UK. He had to contact OZ and get the OZ immigration to find his birth details. They did after a time and sent him the details. UK Immigration would not accept it as he still didn't have any proof of when he left OZ.
He had to go to all his old UK schools and try and find records of him having attended. This was a task in itself as he was now 50 years old.
They managed to find some and the UK finally accepted him and issued him with full UK status.
He continued his enquiries with OZ and they finally found proof of him having been born in OZ so the next thing was, he received papers from OZ stating he was a born OZ and was entitled to a OZ passport. He now has both. Lucky or what.
The 3 kids are now grown up and flown the nest and Bruce and Pam are looking at going to live in OZ next year.
All you should have to do is contact the immigration and get them to find the details of citizenship and apply for a renewal.

This link will take you to a page about applying for a confirmation of citizenship. You may want to give them a call to see if filling the form and making an application for confirmation is all you need in order to then apply for a passport:
