Default Is it possible to retire to NZ at 50 and 60 or waste of time

We are looking for somewhere to retire to I followed the link on this website to ENZimmigration and it says that tho there is no retirement visa you can apply for a residents visa. Does this mean you can actually apply even if you have no intention of working? Do you need to pretend that you are looking for work? Is it possible to get in this way or will they jst laugh when they see our ages? Has anyone done this? sorry so many questions
