Been calling around for prices of medicals - they seem to vary alot.
The closest place near me charge £255 inc bloods and xray per adult.
Other option charges £90 medical, £135 bloods and £50 xray.

I thought the first place seemed quite reasonable?

Also anyone had any problems with high cholesterol? It runs in my partners family and we were wondoring if it would cause problems if his was also found to be high.

Hi there, I think they will probably want to do fasting bloods due to the cholesterol so go prepared for this...ask for an appointment as early as possible. They may refer to medical advisor for further advise but if it runs in the family then they may accept this in a letter from GP and not need to go to a specialist for a referral. Good luck

Hi becky - where are you going for medicals. We live in Kent and the one in Dover was unable to confirm a price and there was a 6 week wait for appointment1 We ended up with Dr Tallent, near Gatwick - very thorough though lol!

Dover was the more expensive quote so we are probably going to use Dr Chapman near Gatwick as he seems the cheapest.

In answer to your query. My husband and I are in our 60s (I only mention this as it might well have some bearing on the medical situation). My OH has been on a 'fat buster' medication for many years as he too has a familial high cholesterol. His medication keeps the cholesterol really good - 4.1. At my medical, my cholesterol came out at 5.7 - I was not taking medication and this was my usual count and my GP was not concerned (I apparently did not have any other adverse factors to warrant putting me on a 'fat buster').

From the blood count results you can see that NZ medical assessor want it 5 or under. NZ medical assessor wanted me to have repeat blood test via my GP and my cholesterol had risen over a couple of months to 6.5/6.8.!! In an effort to head off more delays, I went to my GP and he prescribed Simvastatin 20mg which I took for about 6-8 weeks and the next blood count, whilst under the specialist, showed that it was down to 4.4.

At the same time, there was another factor with a high gamma GT count. By this time, we decided to head off any more delays and went privately to a gastroenterologist and after blood tests/ultrasound/ 2 consultations and loads of £££, she wrote me a report, which the medical assessor accepted.

From our experiences - my husband had to see the gastroenterologist too - we would go straight down the specialist route and not mess around with visits to your GP, as this only leads to a referral to a specialist. The specialist's reports seem to carry far more weight than GP's letters. Unfortunately this does cost a lot of money unless you have private health cover.

We put in our application (Family Sponsorship route, which takes low priority) on 12 March; assigned case officer 12 May and due to the delay throughout the summer months and into the autumn while I took medication and went backwards and forwards, we heard on 12 November that we both had acceptable standard of health.

Don't want to worry you unduly but if there is a time limit involved for you to get into NZ, or whatever, all extra tests do take time, so be aware. I just wish that we had known the way that the medical procedure works and the exact health standards required, as it would have quickened the outcome of the decision on our application by a couple of months. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, eh?

My cholesterol was 6 point something but my BMI was something like 22.4 and wasn't queried at all! Really think it depends on who you get and how they're feeling the day your application fall on their desk! Our problem was my son's Osgood Schlatters (growing pains).

If your BMI is as low as 22.4, do they still check cholesterol?

They still checked my cholesterol because my waist measurement was just over the limit, even tho my BMI was way inside the limit. They didn't query the result tho.

My BMI was 29.4 2 weeks ago and my cholesterol was 7. I have put myself on a diet and have lost 2kg (4.4lbs). My waist is 36 inches, only just in the limit I think. I plan to loose about another 4 kg before I take the medicals. My waist will hopefully reduce as well as a result. My BMI should be below 28 then. Will they still do blood tests if bmi is 28 and waist is below the maximum allowed?

Well done on your progress so far! From what I remember, if your waist and BMI are under the limit, you do not need a fasting blood test. So fingers crossed!
