Default Medical Insurance on 1 Year Work Permit

We are going to NZ on a 1 year work permit and therefore won't be entitled to any publicly-funded health care except in emergencies. Does anyone know of the best insurance to have - I don't think we can use travel insurance when we will be working there?
Is it best to get expat insurance from the UK? Southern Cross etc unfortunately won't cover anyone on a 1 year permit. Plus I know that you pay for GP visits but these are still subsidised so will we have to pay even more than everyone else for these visits?

We sent our eldest to Australia and New Zealand for a year - got our insurance through the Mountaineers society (you can buy the magazines in most major book shops, WHSmiths) it was by far the cheapest and it covers a full year.

Hope this helps

P.S. you don't need to be a member or into Mountaineering. We also gave the same information to 4 other families in the UK who's children were taking a gap year who had nothing to do with Mountaineering, they took out the insurance.

One daughter didn't come back though - fell in love with Australia and stayed
