Medical Help needed please
hi all
i have a 5 year old son with hypopertuitryism and he requires growth hormone.
the high commission have questioned my sons condition and have said the growth hormone will cost to much.
when i went for my medical the panel Dr said there would be no problem and my son would get into NZ.
does anybody know if there are other people from the uk who have been grated visas with this condition.
thanks Dave

Morning Dave
Sorry I can't help answer your question directly, but try looking at this previous thread
http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...ighlight=Forum
Also if you do a search at the top of the page under the New zealand forum, you should find some posts from a lady called Claire Hopkins who's child has CF.She posted some quite serious info on how to deal with NZIS and panel doctors.
Also as a final thought, I found this organisation in NZ, who may be worth contacting, if you haven't already
http://www.magicnz.org.nz/about.html
They may be able to offer you some support or put you in touch with someone who can advise you

Good Luck and keep us updated

Hi Dave.
I merged your new thread with this older one . I'm also going to move this thread into the main forum so you get the wider audience.
I don't know anyone personally who has come into NZ and then received further funding to treat the condition.
Are you asking the question to try to find out if there has been a successful case somewhere and so that would underpin your own application?
I gather from your previous posts that you may have had discussions with NZIS - New Zealand Immigration Service & have been advised that any application you make - either to migrate permanently or to work temporarily - would likely be refused because of the cost.
Have you made an actual PR application which has gone to medical referral and been refused? The next stage after that is applying for a medical waiver which , if the costs are too high, would also be refused. I'm not sure if after this you can then appeal to the Residents Review Board. As previously suggested, the person to ask is Claire Hopkins who has also been right through the mill with this process. Perhaps drop her a Private Message if you haven't already.
Health policy is in part A4 for the NZIS operations manual.
With a medical waiver, several issues are considered. The first one is the $$ cost to NZ.
Would your sons treatment cost more than this $25K NZD ? If the answer to this is yes, then you have an extremely steep uphill battle on your hands .
Currently Kags is having great difficulty getting into NZ because of her weight. Please see the thread HERE
It may be better for you to consult a specialist immigration lawyer about this. You'll want one that will be straight and honest with you about your chances. Migrant agents have recently been required to become licensed to operate . I'd suggest you contact NZAMI and ask them to recommend a consultant than specialises in health referrals. etc.
I'm sorry that I personally can't be of much help or offer you some hope with this. Perhaps someone else may come along that has been through the medical referral / waiver process & been successful.
Good luck and please do let us know how you get on or come back and post here if you are feeling a bit low about it all. It's good to share.

Re: medical info
I expect it would cost much more than NZ$25k. A quick 'back of an envelope' calculation suggests it would cost >$100,000 for human growth hormone alone from 5 to 18 years of age*. This is excluding any costs for replacement of other pituitary hormones and clinic visits/blood tests.
*Exact cost would depend on weight, the brand of the growth hormone used and whatever discounts Pharmac has negotiated.

hi drrobert,
thanks for your reply ,
my son has already been granted funding by the growth hormone committee in nz , i applied for this a couple of months ago . i did not for see all these problems, when i spoke to panel doctor in the UK he said that Daniel would be granted a student visa . The medical assessor in the high commission said she could not make a decision on my sons case so she has forwarded his case to the operations department in wellington ,if it is as clear cut as you believe it to be the answer should be no .do you think they are dragging out a for certain no ??.

Re: Medical Help needed please
Hi Dave,
How did you manage to get funding from NZ for the GH?
Our son who is 10yrs, has been on GH for 6mths after radiotherapy for a brain tumour, five years ago! My husband has been in Auckland for 3mths on a work visa. We applied for PR in June and Kieran's medical was sent to a Medical Assessor, they have asked his Endo for the cost per year in UK which is £4000 and how long he will be on treatment, till he is 16yrs. Still waiting the outcome.
I let you know the outcome.
Angie

Re: Medical Help needed please
hi Angie
its bad news I'm afraid we have just been declined by immigration due to cost.
we were told by the nz panel doctor we would not have a problem.
but when it went to the medical assessor the UK they could not decide so they sent are application to nz and they could not decide, we were told it was going to a health analyst.
the criteria is slightly different for residency and we were applying for a 3 year work visa . we have been in contact with a immigration lawyer in nz and he said Daniel would not be accepted due to cost.
i am not sure with your son because he is 10years and will only require it for six years.
i have a email address for the growth hormone committee ([email protected]) they will liaise with you endo in the UK.
i have done a lot of research on this issue so if you need any more information don't estate to contact us.
i hope you have better news than what we did.
good luck and take care Dave

Re: Medical Help needed please
TBH your kids will be better off medically with UK NHS anyway - there are only 4 million people to pay taxes here - there's very little slack in the system.
