medical help

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone could offer us some advise. We are currently awaiting results of our medicals for migrating to Aus and are a bit worried about a couple of things. We want to know if we were to fail our meds would this lead to an automatic refusal on medical grounds for residency in New Zealand or are their health requirements/ assessments different?

cheers Jay

NZ's health requirements leaflet can be found here. I'm a bit concerned that you don't know where you want to end up, though. If Australia is where you want to be, won't you be unhappy in NZ? They're not entirely alike, by all accounts. ;) Re. the bit in bold above: Australia and New Zealand are different countries, you know. :p

The GP who did our medicals said NZ was stricter than Oz.

Thanks Maz, we think that Aus and New Zealand are both beautiful countries with a lot more to offer our children. It's just that if we were to be refused a visa for Aus then we'll definately be looking at other options.

Have a look through the medical forms HERE
This way you will see what is checked.

Perhaps let us know what your health concerns are. Someone may have had similar when it comes to the medicals.

There's a good chance that you won't fail your medicals. (if you did wouldn't you rather be in the UK where you could receive full medical cover and have continuity of care anyway?)

In the event that you fail Oz's, pass NZ's and still want to live in OZ you have two options open to you. Live in NZ long enough to gain citizenship and then move across the ditch or get an Australian employer to sponsor you for a temp 4 year visa (but only after you've got your NZ PR and have something to fall back on when the 4 years is up)

In either country you're well advised to have medical insurance.

Hi and thanks for the info,
Our youngest daughter (2.5) is currently being assessed for an autistic spectrum disorder, basically she has speech delay. Diac have requested futher info and as you can imagine we've had a crap xmas worrying about everything.
We are now thinking about New Zealand even if our oz visas are granted because it's unfair and ridiculous. We understand that some problems can cost a lot of money to treat but believe us she is'nt that bad and it may even be something that she grows out of.

Re: medical help

Have you searched both the Oz and NZ forums for families in a similar position? You may be able to find out , from them, how they fared.

I'd suggest you start a new thread in the main NZ forum & in the correct area of the Oz forum which highlights your concerns over your daughters speech delay.

You can also try sending a PM to the people in THIS THREAD

I'm sure you're right. My niece was premature & her speech was delayed and even when it developed she was hard to understand for a good few years. Now she's 11 and you'd never know she had a problem, her singing is so good her Mum is considering signing her up for lessons.

Hope it turns out ok for you all.

Hi Bevs!
Yeh we've had a good look at similar cases, some are successful and some are not.
What seems to happen quite a lot is that these families/cases disapear. Whether this is due to unsuccessful outcomes we don't know.
Anyway, oneway or the other we will give people feedback so that even if we don't make it others will have the benefit of our experience.
Cheers J&K and tah again Nerine.
