Ideas for getting those extra points?
Greetings from Wales.
After 12months in battling through to get my EOI ended up with only 100 points.
I'm 43,(20 points). qualified Electronics Engineer with an BTEC HND Electronic Engineering aswell as a BTEC ONC Electrical /Electronics City & Guilds 1,2 & 3 Electronic Servicing. Got (50points) for HND Qualification.
My Wife is 41, Office Manager with RSA 1,2 & 3 ( which having difficulty in getting NZQA verified to claim points). It appears NZIS wont take her employment experience into consideration only qualifications.
A Catch 22 situation, since not having a Degree and being too specialized in Field of Employment. (Printer Repair & some Networking). 15 years experience.
(30 points).
I am a multiskilled Engineer but without the paperwork to prove it.
The only apparent way of getting extra points to qualify is a Job Offer. poss 50 points..........
Any suggestions warmly welcomed.
Thanks.

Hi
Not sure how many extra points it would get you but you could take the IELTS (English exam). The NZIS site would tell you the points it allocates for this. Maybe wife could take it too.
Trust me, I know you are probably English, but you can still take it
Good luck

Hi
Unfortunately you wouldn't get any extra points for sitting the IELTS exam. Speaking English is essential to anyone applying so doesn't work on a points basis.
Getting your partner's quals recognised would give you 20points. It is only the work experience of the principal candidate that is taken into account so her experience is not going to get you any extra
Scraping the barrel but do you have any close relatives in NZ? Is your job on the long term skill shortage list?
Other than that the only way to get extra points is that elusive job offer.
Hope this helps

Re: Ideas for getting those extra points?
You could still submit your EOI and take a chance on selection within the 6 months. While you are sitting in the pool, you can use your time to apply to employers, telling them that you have submitted your EOI and at least you would be showing commitment. A visit to NZ would also help to secure work possibly. We are also in this very frustrating situation, except my OH has no formally recognised qualifications but does get 20 points from the ones I have. He only has 60 points so there are others worse off than you. It may be worth a gamble on the EOI after all. I guess it just depends on who is also in the pool at the same time as you as to whether you are lucky enough to get selected.

I had the same problem - no degree but 10+ years specialist experience - only way to get the extra points is secure a job offer. Or wait a few years while you get a degree..
So its time to pull out all the stops and get an offer - even fly out if necessary.

Hi All,
Thanks for the quick replies.
As it stands, this would be my 2nd EOI. last 1 submitted last September.
The maddening things are:-
One selection was for 105points.
The closest description to my work is on the Long Term shortage list but it's graded as a Level 6 (Electronics Technician) (over here a Technician is classed as Level 4), for a Btech HND while my BTEC HND is only valued at Level 5, cant find out where or how to gain a Level 6 grade.
Just returned from a Fortnight Honeymoon trip around both islands.
Met up with a few people that we did meet at Leeds Expo last year. No real progress really. basically suggested that I just pack up and come back down and gain a work to residence visa.
Too much of a gamble for us without more of a suggestion.
but that would solve the problem in getting the Job points.
Cant do a Degree anymore, my Mathematics would never be upto the standard having a hard time with doing a CISCO networking course, although have passed the 2nd exam, 2 down perhaps 2 to go.
Thanks once again for all the suggestions, will try the Wifes quals, cross fingers here RSA / OCR NVQ3's are recognised.

Re: Ideas for getting those extra points?
Hi All,
after doing some more reading, NZQA no accepts a BTEC HND as Level 6. so this should give me the extra points needed as I can claim the Electronics Technician requirements on Long Term Shortage List. I hope...........
Wish this was done last year.
It stated that some qualifications from UK were exempt? do I still need to send paper work application in with NZQA just to be sure of points?
While re filling in EOI last night,
QUESTION. do I have to include / fill in section regarding children and Parents / Siblings?
My Daughters are over 18 and will not be going to NZ with us.
As for parents/ my brother and sister, is this just as a background check ?
do they have to be included?
Thanks again...

Re: Ideas for getting those extra points?
I think you need to tell them about all your family so that if you wish for any of them to join you later then they have them on record, especially if they use you for points as having family in NZ
Good Luck

Re: Ideas for getting those extra points?
Have included my Daughters but not any of my family. I'm not on speaking terms for past 6 years with them.
have filled in EOI, cross fingers I think may have got 125 points this time, without a job offer. Hope to submit it before next week in time for next selection.
Until the next thrilling installment....................

I would still include the members of your immediate family even if you are not on speaking terms with them.
When you apply for citizenship , one still needs to state about parents whether living, deceased or estranged.
Fingers crossed for the EOI being pulled soon then.

Hi
can you cross the other ones as well please?
Thats first hurdle done, wait to see what they bounce us for this time.
Was reading with interest the Health section, mainly BMI and waist measurements.
These figures, do they cover both male and female ?
I am ok with a BMI of 33 at moment but although 36" trousers fit, my belly comes over the waist band
so its the Power Plate contraption for me again to get rid of the extra pounds.
I blame the KFC side orders when we were down in Christchurch last month, Gravy with mash potatob in a Large Container
No more Fast Food.........
